Okanagan Wetlands Action Plan : A Resource for Local Government and Communities

Posting Date: January 1, 2019
Year Published: 2019
Abstract:
The Action Plan provides guiding principles and a coordinating framework to guide wetland conservation and restoration initiatives across the Okanagan Basin. It is intended to help protect water sources, keep water clean and accessible, minimize the effects of flooding and drought, and preserve and protect rare and endangered ecosystems in the Okanagan.

The Action Plan provides background on why local governments should be concerned about wetlands and why wetlands should be included in local water management planning. It details how regulations, guidelines and policies apply to wetlands and outlines the valuable ecosystem services that wetlands provide. The plan also provides five strategic directions and corresponding goals, how to implement them, and how to measure success. Case studies are presented throughout the plan, providing examples of wetland initiatives completed throughout the Okanagan Basin. A summary of key provincial and Okanagan-specific community initiatives, programs and funding are provided, along with toolkits, strategies, and technical guidance documents.
