The City of Port Coquitlam is looking for an energetic and results orientated individual to join the Legislative Services’ team as the Records and Privacy Advisor. As the organizational lead and corporate advisor, this excluded role is responsible for the development, planning, implementation, coordination and sustainment of the City’s corporate-wide information management and privacy program. This includes providing strategic direction on the City’s corporate records management program and analyzing City department’s records management practices, policies and procedures. Further, the incumbent will interpret the Community Charter, Local Government Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA), City Bylaws and other legislation to ensure the City meets its obligations related to Privacy legislation and regulations.

Some of the key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Provides strategic direction, expertise and guidance on the City’s corporate records management program
  • Oversees and advises on responses related to requests for access to sensitive information, ensuring the City meets its obligations with respect to privacy legislation and regulations, file retention and liability
  • Acts as the City’s Privacy Officer responsible for the dissemination of sensitive information, streamlining records and information management processes
  • Represents the City in investigations by the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia
  • Collaborates with various City Departments to streamline records and information management processes, organizes and leads committees and working groups in support of the records management program


The successful candidate for this position will have:

  • A Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies, Information Management, Archival Studies, Records Management, Business, or related field
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ recent related professional information management experience in Records Management and FOIPPA, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Extensive knowledge of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act
  • Extensive knowledge of records and information management systems for both electronic and paper-based systems
  • Considerable knowledge of legislation, rules and regulations governing the work
  • Extensive knowledge of legal claim processes, municipal departmental functions and structure, policies and procedures
  • A commitment to service excellence and continuous improvement
