Design Guidebook: Maximizing Climate Adaptation Benefits with Trees

Posting Date: April 6, 2018
Year Published: 2018
Abstract:
This quick reference guidebook helps land managers and municipalities use trees to reap climate change adaptation benefits in their landscape design projects, design guidelines and new developments.  It contains checklists for success, a list of climate change adaptation benefits from trees, and design guidance sheets for planting in a range of urban landscapes (e.g. major roads, downtown streets, plazas, parks, playgrounds).

The design guidance sheets are one of the guide’s most useful features. They highlight the advantages, typical constraints, species selection criteria, and provide examples of trees that meet different site condition requirements. Appendix A is also very useful; it is a preliminary species database that assists users in choosing the right trees for their site design context and climate.
