Abstract:

The District of Kitimat is encouraging persons who identify as Indigenous to apply for careers at the municipality following a successful application for an equity-enhancing program with the BC Office of the Human Rights Commissioner.

Earlier this year the District, with the support of Haisla Nation Council and Unifor Local 2300, received approval for a program that allows the District to give hiring preference to qualified job applicants who are Indigenous. This program has been approved until 2028.

Beginning immediately, applicants are invited to voluntarily self-identify as Indigenous on our application forms or in cover letters. This self-declaration will support our recruitment process and help create a more diverse workplace.

“Indigenous people are underrepresented in many areas of municipal governance,” says Mayor Phil Germuth.  “This program will grow that representation within the District and supports our local commitment to reconciliation.”

Haisla Nation Council Chief Councillor Crystal Smith also welcomes this new program.

“I wholeheartedly endorse this decision and look forward to witnessing the positive changes it brings to the District of Kitimat’s workforce, and our working relationship,” says Chief Councillor Smith. “This initiative signifies a vital journey towards fostering meaningful relationships, understanding, and unity between the District of Kitimat and the Haisla Nation.”

The District meanwhile encourages other organizations to consider applying to this program to support stronger Indigenous representation. Anyone who would like to know more about the application process to support their organization can reach out to the District of Kitimat’s Director of Human Resources and Labour Relations.

All open job postings are on the District of Kitimat website at www.kitimat.ca/careers.
