Public Service Assistant

The West Vancouver Memorial Library (WVML) is well known as an innovative and award-winning library that prioritizes inclusion, a learning culture, organizational integrity, and enhancing community through our programs, services, and relationships. WVML is currently seeking a permanent, part-time Public Service Assistant to be based out of the Youth Department, though the work location and assignment could change in the future. This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about public libraries to work primarily with kids, families, and educators, as well as adults. 

Reporting to the Head of Youth Services duties will include, but are not limited to (with assistance from a Librarian): 

  • Assisting kids and families with reader’s advisory and reference at the Youth Department public service desk 
  • Opportunities to facilitate established programs with templates and scripts, including Early Years storytime 
  • Assisting patrons of all ages with technology to meet a variety of information needs 


The successful candidate in this role will primarily be based out of the Youth Services Department, but will work closely with other departments, and could be re-assigned to a different service desk. The Public Service Assistant is responsible for providing service to customers in person, over the phone, and via email. The successful candidates will possess: 

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; 
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; 
  • Working knowledge of PC and Mac platforms and software applications, mobile device and e-reader platforms, apps, social networking tools, library catalogues, photocopiers and scanners, and an ability to instruct and assist customers in the use of these tools; 
  • Previous experience working with young people and families is an asset 
  • An ability to speak a language other than English is an asset; we particularly have needs for Farsi, Mandarin and French speakers 


The successful candidate must enjoy assisting customers on an individual basis. This position is ideally suited to someone with patience, who is adaptable and can multi-task, who is calm under pressure, and who has a genuine passion for working with kids and teens. 

A certificate or diploma in early childhood care, education, or Library & Information Technology is an asset, though not required. Completion of courses specific to child development, education, library technology, or computer systems is considered an asset.  

The successful candidate will be required to supply an acceptable police information check and a copy of their credentials.

Position Status:
Union (WVMEA) – Permanent Part-Time  

Hours of Work:
28 hours per week (hours and days of work may vary)
Wednesday – Saturday schedule to start

Starting Rate of Pay:
$29.20 per hour
This position has a pay structure with five steps which increase based on the number of hours worked.
