BC Local Government Job Posting Service

Chief Administrative Officer

Haida Gwaii beckons with this opportunity to live and work in BC’s “Galapagos of the North.” Here you will stroll on sandy beaches, marvel at splendid forests, and learn the history and culture of the Haida Nation.  You and your family will have opportunities to enjoy sport fishing, hunting, boating, kayaking and exploring.

The Village of Daajing Giids is a charming hub in an exquisite setting by the sea. The town has a population of 964 and has been a municipality for 19 years. We are served by BC Ferries from Prince Rupert, Air Canada via the K'il Kun Xidgwangs Daanaay (formerly Sandspit) Airport and Pacific Coastal Airlines via the Masset Airport both direct to Vancouver. Off island connections to more urban areas are immediate and easy. Schools, shopping, health services, a modern hospital and family doctors are all located within the community along with many other amenities.

Potential candidates will have five years’ experience in a senior municipal or equivalent administrative position working directly with elected officials, appointed or volunteer boards. A related degree, diploma or training would be considered an asset. The successful applicant will manage the day-to-day affairs of the municipality, working with the Mayor and Council on bylaws, open government initiatives, community planning and development and continuing to improve communication between Council, Staff and community stake holders. The CAO is also the Corporate Officer and the Approving Officer.

Challenges will be diverse, and your creative, hands on, individual nature will be adept at thinking in original and open-minded ways. Written and verbal communication skills are critical. Attention to shepherding a number of projects at one time, and responding to emerging issues in real time, will be important. Mayor and Council are looking for an applicant with experience, ambition, self-motivation, integrity and tact.

Candidates will enjoy playing an effective role interfacing with all the stakeholder groups of the community and with administrators and mangers of Local Governments, Council of the Haida Nation and Haida communities, and other government agencies on Haida Gwaii, and with Federal and Provincial authorities. Along with proven organizational abilities, the successful candidate will have a strong understanding of First Nations matters, UNDRIP and the reconciliation process.

Daajing Giids has very good value for your housing dollar and that coupled with a generous benefit package makes this an attractive opportunity.

Both a full job description and the salary and benefits package are available. Attention has also been given to relocation and isolation benefits in order to attract a well-qualified person who is willing to make this beautiful region home.

Salary: up to $105,000 (under review). As a resident of Haida Gwaii you will also qualify for the CRA Northern Living Allowance (Zone B) and travel allowance.
