Cultural Support Worker


REPORTS TO Director of Health

COMPENSATION $26.76 to $27.57 (NEE: H – 9) to $31.47 to $32.42 (NEE: H – 15) * the above rates subject to education and / or experience or a combination of both.
STATUS Up to 30-hours per week | 6-month term

Malahat Nation represents approximately 350+ members with two reserve lands located on the western shore of Saanich Inlet, south of the village of Mill Bay, about 40-kilometres north of Victoria, British Columbia. Malahat Nation is looking for the right candidate to join our Health Department team! We are looking for fun, energetic, dependable and organized staff. PURPOSE: Reporting to the Director of Health, the Cultural Support Worker will be responsible for guiding and engaging Malahat Nation cultural support and traditional healing for members and working collaboratively to design appropriate activities that meet the cultural needs of members. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated, mature individual with strong interpersonal and communication skills. This is a ‘6-month’ term position with the possibility to extend, subject to budget considerations, working up to 30-hours per week, in office, with flexible work hours including some evenings and / or weekends as needed, with local to moderate travel required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promote and support traditional cultural teachings and practises for Malahat members.
  • Provide supportive and trusting relationships to members in need.
  • Provide support in establishing and continuing cultural programs and initiatives including but not limited to sweat lodge etc.
  • Engage in collaborative community partnerships to promote traditional healing, teachings, and protocols.
  • Maintain an appropriate record and information system and ensure that confidentiality is a priority.
  • Prepare annual reports and provide accurate data on programs when needed.
  • Assist in creating a model of cultural safety for grieving, ceremony, and aid in reintroducing traditional practices to Malahat members.
  • Act as a role model and mentor to members within the community.
  • Liaise with elders, traditional resources, and administration to ensure correct protocol is practised at Malahat hosted events.
  • Maintain an inventory of ceremonial items for use. Attain approvals and purchase items as needed.
  • Work with local partners and non-Indigenous community service organizations and institutions to promote cultural competency, safety, and cultural sustainability.
  • Work with partners and other governments to support the development and implementation of a culturally based work plan that best supports programs and services.
  • Work closely with the Health Team to work towards global community wellness.
  • Other duties as required


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Diploma or Degree preferred in Human Services or related field with minimum 1-year experience, or combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture including land-based activities, spiritual understanding, importance of collaboratively working with our elders and familiarity with community preferred
  • CPR and standard First Aid training is required (training support available as needed)
  • Criminal Record Check (CRC) including vulnerable sector search prior to employment required
  • Class 5 BC Driver License with Driver Abstract is required
  • Effective December 3, 2021 full vaccination against COVID-19 is required to be eligible for employment at Malahat Nation. All individuals must show Proof of Vaccination as a mandatory condition of their employment


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Understanding of Indigenous culture; hul’q’umi’num language is an asset
  • Life experience working with our local Indigenous community, including involvement with culture and traditions
  • Strong organizational and time management with the ability to multitask different tasks
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community resources
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain respectful relationships with children, youth, and adults while assisting them in development of interpersonal, communication, and essential skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and maintain reports, records, statistics, and case files
  • Follow established methods and procedures
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite programs including basic computer skills
  • Show tact, courtesy, and discretion in dealing with children and families maintaining strict confidentiality in the course of duties
  • Physically capable of performing the job duties
