Manager, Communications and Government Relations

The City is searching for a Manager, Communication and Government Relations that has experience in leadership and supervision; with proven ability to see what employees have achieved and what they aspire to be. Reporting to the Director, Corporate Administration, the Manager, Communications and Government Relations is responsible for oversight of the communications team plus internal and external communication while providing direction in the development and implementation of the City’s internal and external communications and public relations strategies, programs and initiatives.
 
Requirements:

  • Hold a degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • Have sound related supervisory experience, plus proven results in issues management, media relations, collaborating with First Nations, social media and public engagement.
  • Ideally, you are accredited in public relations with the IABC or CPRS and are familiar with the IAP2 method of public engagement.
  • Develop and implement complex and specialized corporate communication initiatives and strategies.
  • Provide recommendations, advice and support to organizational leaders, including the Mayor, in communication of internal and corporate messages to ensure transparency and understanding of City projects, programs and services.
  • Liaison with a variety of internal and external contacts including City departments, local and national media, municipal partners, the Semiahmoo First Nation, the public and other levels of government.
  • Having a strong skill set for internal communications is vital to establish an internal communications strategy in conjunction with senior managers to ensure employees are kept informed.
  • Oversee, research, and write a variety of communications materials such as news releases, newsletters, annual reports, grant applications, speeches and speaking notes.
  • Maintain and regulate the City’s internet and intranet communications and social media outreach tools.
  • Being able to work well and maintain composure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Have considerable knowledge of the principles, objectives, methods and techniques of internal and external communications and public relations work relevant to municipal operations.
  • Advise staff and external contacts in regard correct usage of the corporate brand.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and hold and maintain a valid class 5 BC Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.


The successful candidate should be a self-starter, highly organized and possess outstanding verbal and communication skills with the ability to exercise diplomacy, tact and professionalism. Be able understand and be flexible regarding political sensitivities and needs along with a team-oriented leadership style. Enthusiastic to mentor and will welcome the challenge of seeking continuous improvements in organizational efficiency. Being in this role It is essential that you are able to develop and maintain positive and collaborative relationships with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
