The Parks Department has an immediate vacancy for two (2) regular full-time Field Arborists. Reporting to the Supervisor, Urban Forestry (Parks), the Field Arborist performs a variety of skilled arboriculture tasks for municipal parks, public and open spaces. The work includes risk assessment, planting, pruning, removal, disease treatment and the investigation of tree-related complaints. The incumbent directs and oversees the work of one or more in house crews and contractors engaged in the work, ensuring schedules, procedures and established performance and safety standards are met. Considerable independence of judgement and action is exercised, while complex matters are referred to a superior.

Examples of work include:

  • Assigns, directs and participates in the work of one or more crews engaged in climbing, pruning, tree planting and removal tasks.
  • Issues work requests to crews and contractors for specific arboriculture tasks; provides instruction and checks the work during progress and upon completion to ensure conformance;
  • Inspects and identifies diseased trees or trees posing an actual or potential hazard to public safety; determines required treatment; undertakes emergency control action as required.
  • Provides information, assistance and interpretation to the public and internal and external stakeholders regarding arboriculture and urban forestry related policies, regulations and procedures; including issuing permits, investigating complaints, and recommending appropriate remedial actions.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records, files and correspondence related to the work performed.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of arboriculture maintenance, forest management and planting programs in accordance with department priorities, regulations and industry standards.
  • Safely operates tools and equipment associated with arboriculture work including pruning, rigging, cabling and felling.
  • Occasionally performs tree climbing activities to undertake required tree maintenance work.


The successful applicant will possess:

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in arboriculture and urban forestry work.
  • Considerable knowledge of tree species, diseases and integrated pest management methods.
  • Ability to direct and supervise the work activities of one or more subordinates.
  • Ability to provide direction to and check the work of internal crews and external contractors.
  • Ability to conduct site inspections, investigate complaints and to take or recommend appropriate remedial action.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with the public, and internal and external contacts, and provide information and assistance related to the work performed.
  • Ability to maintain and process office records, including skill in operating Microsoft Office and related computer programs.
  • Skill in the safe use and proper care of tools and equipment required to perform the work.
  • Ability to work after hours and on weekends to respond to emergencies.
  • Ability to perform physical labour and work outside in inclement weather conditions.


Qualifications
Completion of a diploma in Horticulture, Arboriculture, Landscape Architecture, or a related field, plus sound related experience, or an equivalent combination of training or experience. Required certifications and licenses include: Certified Arborist (ISA or equivalent); Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ); and a valid BC Class 5 Drivers Licence.
Preference will be given for a minimum three years of demonstrated progressive related arboriculture experience in a municipal setting.
 
Details
The hourly rate for this full-time unionized position is $43.00 per hour (2024 rates) and based on a 40-hour work week.
