Lifeguard/Instructor - Aquatics

Schedule: 48 hours bi-weekly (0.60 FTE); Tuesday & Thursday 2:00PM to 10:30PM, Saturday 8:00AM to 4:30PM

This position encompasses both lifeguarding duties and high-quality swim instruction on an assigned shift, at Edmonds Community Centre. Our Lifeguard Instructors ensure the safety of swimmers utilizing the aquatic facility, provide a safe and clean environment, and engage with a diverse client base to provide exceptional customer service. We are looking for Lifeguard Instructors to educate on pool rules; perform minor maintenance tasks; provide first aid treatment; lead instructional and recreational aquatic programs for all age ranges and to provide information to the public regarding swimmer progress and instructional evaluation techniques. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include up to high school graduation, supplemented by courses in lifeguarding, lifesaving, aquatic instruction, fitness instruction and pool maintenance, plus sound related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Sound knowledge of the theory and practice of lifeguarding, lifesaving, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid; working knowledge of teaching methods and group leadership techniques emphasizing instruction in water safety and aquatic skills, and of pool operations including water filtration, chlorination, and heating. We are looking for Lifeguard Instructors who have the ability to display sound aquatic skills and to instruct in these skills at standards set by relevant authorities; to conduct and promote fitness programs; to establish and maintain courteous and effective working relationships with officials, user groups, coworkers, and the public, and who can prepare and maintain records related to the work. A Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard – Pool award, Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor award, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate – Level C, and a BCRPA Aquatic Fitness Leader – Aquatics award is required. A Lifesaving Instructor certificate is desirable.
