The District of Wells is located off the natural gas grid in the Cariboo, which when combined with the cold, high altitude leads to high heating costs. A biomass district heating system will replace imported high cost fuel oil and propane with regional products. The system would serve the fire hall, community hall, municipal office and the community centre (which currently also houses the local school and local artists) with the potential to add additional facilities. The four buildings are owned by the Municipality and the intention is to connect these four buildings with an underground district heating system and switch from propane, heating oil and electricity to biomass.

The District has completed a number of feasibility studies and reports that recommend construction and materials and has successfully received funding to complete this project. At this time the District would like to retain an engineer that will work with the District to finalize all plans, order materials and coordinate the construction and installation.
