Richmond Takes the LEED with Gold Community Centre

City of Richmond
RICHMOND - Richmond’s City Centre Community Centre has achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold status. Meeting the City’s commitments for high performance buildings, the City ensured that sustainability was a key factor in the community centre’s design and construction. To receive LEED certification, the building satisfied prerequisites and earned points to achieve Gold status.

Some of the sustainable practices include the use of recycled and locally produced materials, the installation of high efficiency fixtures and the use of natural day lighting. Construction waste diversion was also practiced during construction, where materials were sorted for reuse and recycling.

City Centre Community Centre also offers sustainable operations and programming, such as community recycling days, a book exchange in the community living room, and signage and educational materials promoting environmental sustainability.

The City of Richmond constructs new corporate facilities following the High Performance Building Policy, which was adopted by Council. The policy uses the LEED rating system as the measurement tool and sets clear direction for the sustainable construction of City buildings, targeting better-than-code construction. The results of the High Performance Building Policy are evident. In addition to City Centre Community Centre, Steveston Fire Hall No. 2 and the Richmond Community Safety Building—which houses the Richmond RCMP detachment—are also certified LEED Gold. The Richmond Olympic Oval and Hamilton Fire Hall No. 5 are both certified LEED Silver.

LEED certifications are also a target for the upcoming Minoru Complex, Brighouse Fire Hall No. 1 and Cambie Fire Hall No. 3. These projects are all currently under construction.
