The pot thickens: Managing cannabis use and impairment in the workplace

Recreational cannabis is now legalized, leaving many organizations concerned about their workplace obligations, particularly where impairment is suspected. Join us for this workshop which focuses on providing managers, supervisors and HR professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond to the use of cannabis by employees.

Harris lawyer Brad Cocke will address the legal issues and relevant case law, specific to drugs in the workplace, including occupational health and safety and human rights considerations. He will also discuss how employers can manage cannabis-related issues in this changing legal landscape.
  • Cannabis basics – from illicit drugs to legal medicine
  • How to manage workers who are authorized to uses medical cannabis
  • How to react when you suspect an employee is impaired at work
  • How to conduct an effective investigation including when drug testing is appropriate
  • Appropriate responses – whether to discipline or accommodate
  • How to draft and introduce effective substance use policy

About the speaker

Brad assists public and private sector employers with labour, employment, human rights, and workers’ compensation matters. In relation to drugs and alcohol, Brad has prepared over 60 substance use policies – including for airlines, police departments, municipalities, and school districts – as well as advising on testing procedures and labour issues. Brad has also been co-counsel on multiple grievances where terminations were upheld for cannabis use.
