This is traffic maintenance work involving unskilled and semi-skilled manual tasks. The Markings and Signs Worker 1 performs tasks assigned by a supervisor engaged in skilled traffic maintenance work which includes painting crosswalks, safety zones, and other road markings, as well as installing and replacing signs and mountings. An incumbent loads and unloads equipment and materials; fills paint containers or tanks; loads thermoplastic bricks into heater; sweeps street to prepare for painting; operates a water sprayer to cool thermoplastic when applied; sets out cones at crosswalks for protection around painting areas; gathers cones when paint is dry; observes and controls traffic flow and alerts the supervisor to hazards, if necessary. Digs holes for the installation of street signs and posts; breaks concrete and asphalt with steel bar or jackhammer; backfills holes with dirt or cement; removes and fastens signs. May operate a variety of City vehicles used in transporting equipment, parts, materials, supplies, tools and employees to job sites; loads and unloads material, supplies and equipment and maintains vehicle as required. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12, plus some experience in related work. Knowledge of practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in traffic maintenance work; of the standards governing the type and location of crosswalks, other related road markings and signs. Ability to recognize the hazards involved in working amidst traffic and take necessary precautionary measures; to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions; to deal tactfully with the public; to physically perform the work required and the ability to drive a light service truck when required. Skill in the use of hand brushes and other equipment used in the work. Other additional preferred certifications include WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Fall Protection and TCP. A Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is required.

Schedule: 80 hours bi-weekly; Monday to Friday from 7:00AM to 3:30PM. Seasonal hours may vary and include graveyard shifts for weekdays and weekends.
