Communications Coordinator Designer

PURPOSE: Reporting to the Communications Manager, the Communications Coordinator will play a key role in achieving Cowichan Tribes’ communications objectives by developing compelling communications materials that effectively engage audiences and disseminate information regarding organizational & departmental programing, services, initiatives and events. Responsibilities and tasks focus on developing visual content and publications for the organization’s primary communications channels: print and digital newsletter and department guide, website, social media, and communications app. This is a full-time permanent position that works primarily in the office with limited travel as required.
 
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Cowichan Tribes offers an excellent benefit and pension plan available after successful completion of the probationary period. The position includes paid training, paid vacation and paid sick leave. Depending on related skills, education, and experience, the position starts at $31.52- $33.45 per hour ($57,357.52 - $60,871.31 annually) to $34.75 - $36.86 per hour ($63,248.29 - $67,092.79 annually).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work collaboratively with Cowichan Tribes departments to develop content for the monthly Quw’utsun Newsletter and Spring/Fall Department Guide and provide support with their submissions, as needed
  • Develop layout and design for the monthly Quw’utsun newsletter and bi-annual Department Guide
  • Provide design support for internal communications materials, including the employee newsletter
  • Develop layout and design for other marcom materials and publications, including, signage, posters, infographics, events materials, and the Cowichan Tribes Annual Report
  • Champion and advance the Cowichan Tribes’ Brand and ensure communication materials are consistent with approved brand guidelines to increase brand awareness and performance
  • Work with team members to design and order branded materials and collateral
  • Promote cultural protocols, teachings and support the revitalization of the Hul’q’umi’num’ language through communication initiatives and content
  • Support related projects and events as needed
  • Additional responsibilities may include:
    • Coordinate and schedule content for the Cowichan Tribes Communication App and social media
    • Update Cowichan Tribes website
  • Other related duties as required


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (please attach all required documents)

  • Degree or Diploma in Graphic Design, Marketing, Communications, or another relevant field preferred
  • An equivalent combination of related education, training, or other qualifications and experience will be considered
  • Minimum two years’ related work experience preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with graphic design, desktop publishing, digital marketing software programs, web & mobile applications, social media and website development and maintenance
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check required
  • Experience working in a First Nations community considered an asset
  • Effective December 1, 2021: full vaccination against COVID-19 is required to be eligible for employment at Cowichan Tribes. Employees must show Proof of Vaccination as a mandatory condition of employment


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, ability to track and meet deadlines and prioritize responsibilities
  • Strong computer skills, including demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, digital marketing platforms, web & mobile applications and social media platforms
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and Canva considered an asset
  • Strong attention to detail, resourcefulness and problem-solving, curious, keen to develop new skills and try new ways of achieving desired outcomes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to develop positive working relationships with staff, community and partners
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Knowledge of Cowichan Tribes customs, land, culture and traditions or a willingness to learn
