BC Members: Capital Project Grants Available for Community Organizations
The second year of British Columbia's Community Gaming Grants capital project program gives organizations an opportunity to apply for funding to complete projects that provide significant benefits to their communities.  The application dates for the capital project program have been adjusted for 2018, with eligible organizations having from June 1 to July 31, 2018, to submit their applications.  This funding will support capital projects with a total cost of over $20,000. Grants of up to $250,000 are available, for 20% to 50% of the total project costs. Matching funds from the applicants are required, and may include in-kind contributions of tangible assets and letters of guarantees from other funders.

Three categories of capital projects continue to be eligible for funding:
  • Facilities: construction, renovation or maintenance of facilities.
  • Community infrastructure: public amenities, such as docks and parks.
  • Acquisitions: the purchase of fixed capital assets for long-term use, including vehicles and equipment.
Applications in the capital projects sector will be competitively adjudicated, with consideration also given to regional distribution, representation of the six community gaming grant sectors, project size and Indigenous inclusion. The Province will announce the successful candidates and award the grants by Oct. 31, 2018.

The Community Gaming Grants branch will be hosting a webinar detailing the eligibility criteria for the capital projects sector on May 23, 2018. Registration details will be posted online in the coming weeks.
Quick Facts:
  • Every year, commercial gambling generates hundreds of millions of dollars that the Government of B.C. invests in key services, including health care and education, for citizens and communities throughout the province.
  • A portion of these revenues are allocated via the Community Gaming Grants program into community-based capital projects. This funding helps not-for-profit organizations invest in facilities, infrastructure and major acquisitions that provide direct benefit to their communities.
  • The Community Gaming Grants program also distributes program grants to a wide array of organizations that make life better for British Columbians, such as arts and culture groups, sport, environment, public safety, human and social services, and parent advisory councils.
  • Government is committed to the success of the Community Gaming Grants program and the support it provides to more than 5,000 organizations each year throughout the province.

2017 FEATURED CAMA AWARD SUBMISSIONS

Emerging Leaders Program
In 2015, the City of Surrey launched the Emerging Leaders Program to proactively equip our internal talent in meeting the demands of building a world-class city. Our Council envisions a future for our city that is thriving, green, and inclusive, and to attain this vision, we are preparing our next generation of leaders with the skills and organizational relationships that will enable them to excel.  The two-year Program was designed through interdepartmental collaboration and was anchored by our City’s values and competencies. Rather than relying solely on an instructional approach, the Program goes well-beyond by guiding these individuals from theory to high-impact application in their current day-to-day. This is accomplished through a holistic blend of methods including a cohort-based model; relationship building with mentors and City leaders; journaling to stimulate deeper learning; 360°s conducted through rich dialogue; and execution of projects that have real impact on the community.

The City of Surrey submitted a nomination to the 2017 CAMA Awards of Excellence Program under the category Professional Development for municipalities with a population over 100,000.  If you would like to see their full submission please visit the CAMA Member's Section, Awards of Excellence/Best Practices section and search "Surrey".  If you would like more information please contact Vincent Lalonde, City Manager at 604-591-4388 or [email protected]

Create Amazing Organizational Culture Initiative
In late September 2015, the following vision for the City of Chestermere (City) was born: The City is an Amazing place to work that creates incredible results. The vision of an Amazing place to work is inspired by the idea that to encourage extraordinary performance from employees and get employees to do great things, you must create an Amazing culture that inspires, empowers and energizes employees.  This vision brought about the realization that the City needed an identifiable organizational culture and Human Resources was tasked with translating the Amazing workplace vision into an initiative that can create an Amazing culture and workplace.  Becoming an Amazing workplace that will generate incredible results requires employee creativity and innovation and time for exploration and discovery in addition to normal work.  There is the freedom to fail as long as lessons are learned and there is not too much at risk.  Employees also have the authority they need to be innovative in finding ways to achieve their goals that are aligned to Council's Strategic Plan.  The Create Amazing Initiative is already in its second year.  City employee morale is high, employees are energized and producing incredible results.

The City of Chestermere submitted a nomination to the 2017 CAMA Awards of Excellence Program under the Willis Award for Innovation Category for municipalities with a population under 20,000.  If you would like to see their full submission please visit the CAMA Member's Section, Awards of Excellence/Best Practices section and search "City of Chestermere".  If you would like more information please contact  please contact Tracy Buteau at [email protected]

North Saanich Municipal Hall Replacement
The Municipal Hall project demonstrates two significant innovations: innovation in procurement and innovation in  green building with a clean energy back up system. The approach is a highly cost effective solution. The $2.5 million project replaced a part of the municipal hall and added about 11,000 square feet of new building space with a project cost (including all site work and green building technologies) about $225 per square foot. The procurement process was an innovative modified design build request for proposals within which Council was provided construction drawings and firm prices without any obligation to proceed with the project. The green building elements included mechanical, electrical and architectural aspects and a cost effective, innovative Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) with battery bank in lieu of a diesel Generator. Other green elements include: variable refrigerant flow heating and cooling system, electric vehicle charging station for the public, and a kitchen organics composter. The SPV system will save the municipality about $38,000 over 40 years, provide back-up power to our Municipal Hall which includes an off grid Emergency Operating Centre, and enable us to power the entire municipal hall for a full day.

The District of North Saanich submitted a nomination to the 2017 CAMA Awards of Excellence Program under the Willis Award for Innovation Category for municipalities with a population under 20,000.  If you would like to see their full submission please visit the CAMA Member's Section, Awards of Excellence/Best Practices section and search "District of North Saanich".  If you would like more information please contact Rob Buchan, CAO at 250-661-2414 or [email protected]

Information Technology Cooperative Education Community Partnership Program
In 2014, The City of Mississauga formally partnered with Sheridan College to create a student cooperative education community partnership program.  The program gives back to the community by helping influence youth and giving them the knowledge and skill required to succeed within an information technology career.  Also, the partnership program facilitated a succession planning program allowing a cooperative education student the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and step into available job roles.  A pool of potential employees has been created who are ready to join the job workforce when required.  This was especially beneficial during the Pan American Games hosted by the City of Mississauga in 2015 when additional staff was required.  Furthermore, the Information Technology team hires approximately 30 cooperative education students each year in order to help achieve operational goals including increasing help desk first call resolution rate, reducing cost per incident and reducing overall operational cost. Currently, 30-50% of all help desk calls are handled and resolved by cooperative education students and the program has helped to fill a service delivery gap.

City of Mississauga submitted a nomination to the 2017 CAMA Awards of Excellence Program under the category Professional Development for municipalities with a population over 100,000.  If you would like to see their full submission please visit the CAMA Member's Section, Awards of Excellence/Best Practices section and search "Mississauga".  If you would like more information please contact Ryan Lim - Program Manager, IT Desktop and Support at 905-615-3200 or [email protected]
