Expanding Outdoor Smoke-Free Spaces

Award Details: UBCM Excellence Award Nominee - Partnerships
Short Description:
In 2015, Dawson Creek became the first community in northern BC to implement a comprehensive smoke-free outdoor spaces bylaw. This is the direct result of a collaborative, consultative and local solution – a must for northern communities, where smoking rates trend about 10% higher than the rest of the province. In keeping with the City’s mission statement to create “…a healthy environment for all generations,” the City partnered with Northern Health, the BC Cancer Society, Jan Enns Communications and nursing students at Northern Lights College, to tackle a common goal to further expand outdoor smoke-free spaces, reducing the harm from secondhand smoke and denormalizing tobacco use for adults and children alike. Together, this partnership developed a comprehensive public education campaign, including a public forum hosted by local nursing students, and used the power of personal contact to increase awareness, overcome barriers and solicit feedback on the proposed bylaw.
