Metro Vancouver Organics Disposal Ban

Contributor: Metro Vancouver (Regional District)

Award Details: UBCM Excellence Award Nominee - Leadership & Innovation (Green Initiatives)
Short Description:
As of January 1, 2015, Metro Vancouver implemented a new program to encourage residents and businesses to separate food waste from regular garbage.  The goal of the program is to divert more organic material from disposal and ensure it is managed in a sustainable fashion.  The organics are processed into compost and/or biogas energy, which supports a circular economy.  This disposal ban builds on existing disposal bans on yard trimmings, cardboard and recyclable containers.
