Short Description:
Coming into the cultural planning process, the City of Nanaimo knew that in order to be successful, we would need support from the culture sector and community.  This knowledge came from previous experience with plans and strategies where the culture community did not identify with the final product.  To alleviate this problem, in 2011 the City put forward the idea to create a Technical Team to develop a new Cultural Plan.  This idea was discussed with the City, Nanaimo Museum, Nanaimo Art Gallery and Port Theatre, and it was agreed that there was a need to include other professional culture managers in the process.  This group was then expanded to include the Nanaimo Archives, Theatre One, Crimson Coast Dance Society, Vancouver Island Symphony and the Conservatory of Music and ultimately transitioned into the Cultural Managers’ Working Group (CMWG).  This group recently developed its Charter including an outline of its mandate.
