The guide provides resources to planners and local government stakeholders who are working to implement the four Green Shores principles in their communities:
  1. Preserve the integrity or connectivity of shoreline processes
  2. Maintain or enhance habitat diversity and function
  3. Minimize or reduce pollutants to the environment
  4. Reduce cumulative impacts to the shoreline environment
The guide outlines a framework (including shoreline classification, official community plan policies and objectives, development permit area guidelines, and zoning provisions) to organize local government actions, and provides examples of language for local government policies and bylaws for shoreline development and protection that incorporate Green Shores principles. Example policies are included in sidebars, making them easy to find when scanning the text.
In this updated version of the guide, a section on climate change outlines coastal impacts and examples of how local regulations have addressed this to date. In addition, two appendices provide an overview of 20 local governments and their relevant policies, as well as more information on the Green Shores credit rating system.
