Affordable Seniors Rental Housing Units Planned in Lumby

Village of Lumby
LUMBY - The Lumby & District Senior Citizens Housing Society and the Village of Lumby are incredibly excited to be partnering with the Province of BC to build 20 affordable seniors rental housing units. These 20 units will assist Lumby in addressing the affordable housing need for seniors in the community.

The projects are funded through the Building BC: Community Housing Fund and will provide 2,455 rental homes for individuals, families, seniors, people with disabilities and Indigenous peoples.

“Seniors in Lumby have had a challenging time finding a place to call home that is affordable and accessible,” says Vernon-Monashee MLA Harwinder Sandhu.

Elinor Warner President of The Lumby & District Senior Citizens Housing Society says “Our Society would like to thank the Council and all of the Community organizations who supported and made our application successful. These homes are needed and we look forward to the completion of the project.”

Mayor Acton says “The last time I spoke with the president of the society she advised me that they have a 2-page waiting list. After learning this Council met with staff to work on providing property to assist the society in filling this much needed gap in our housing for seniors.”

About Lumby & District Senior Citizens Housing Society

Lumby and District Senior's Housing Society incorporated under the Society's Act on October 8, 1974. The originators included a group of citizens who were concerned with the housing that was not available for seniors in the community. They decided there should be a low cost facility for seniors, which would allow them to remain in the community they helped to build. Pat Duke, the Mayor of Lumby at that time, along with his council members and many dedicated volunteers brought this to fruition. The Society became a registered charity of tax exemption status in 1996 and has been running Saddle Mountain Place ever since. The Society also manages Monashee

Place for BC Housing which is an additional 16 units for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities.

Saddle Mountain Place is made up of 40 units which include 20 Bachelor Suites and 20 one bedroom suites. Tenants range in age from 55 to 90. The rent is very affordable as the goal is to provide low cost housing for seniors. Each unit has a front door which opens into a long hallway and a back door which opens to a small porch. There is a small garden area for each tenant off their porch.
