Saanich Moves Forward with Active Transportation Plan

District of Saanich

SAANICH - The District of Saanich officially adopted its first active transportation plan after final approval by Council on Monday, June 18. The plan, Moving Saanich Forward, was the result of 18 months of consultation with residents, businesses and other levels of government.

The plan will guide the District’s investments in active transportation over the next 30 years, including improvements to pedestrian, cycling and trail networks.

“An active transportation plan will help provide a more balanced transportation system, support healthier options for getting around, improve safety for all road users and strengthen community and neighbourhood connections,” said Director of Engineering Harley Machielse. “We would not have been able to develop this plan without feedback from thousands of residents. We appreciate Saanich citizens taking the time to help us craft this plan.”

The plan establishes a vision, goals and targets to improve and increase active transportation throughout Saanich with 19 strategies. The strategies range from building more sidewalks and bus shelters to improving land use to improve connections.

Developing the plan involved exploring options, drafting ideas, sharing results, speaking with community members and stakeholders then refining content to get to the final version. Saanich staff are now working on details to implement and monitor the strategies within the active transportation plan.

Details on the plan, feedback results and background information are available on Saanich.ca.
