Planning Work to Begin on Coquitlam's Place Maillardville

City of Coquitlam

COQUITLAM – Coquitlam is one step closer to a new Place Maillardville Community Centre as the project moves to the next phase of the planning process.

Preliminary planning work for the replacement of the 39-year-old building has been underway since 2015, including site investigations and a workshop with City staff and Société Place Maillardville Society board members, as well as interviews with key community stakeholders. The project is now ready to move to detailed facility project planning and design development, including public consultation.

The future Place Maillardville Community Centre is expected to be 1,750 – 1,850 square metres (19,000 – 20,000 square feet) in size, which would enhance the amenities and services offered within a scale, budget and size appropriate for the neighbourhood.

Program spaces and amenities may include:

  • a multi-use gymnasium / dance / fitness space,
  • multi-purpose spaces,
  • a seniors lounge that can convert to a youth space in the evenings,
  • a demonstration / teaching kitchen,
  • administrative offices,
  • outdoor space for passive use, and
  • a small playground.

The Place Maillardville site may also potentially accommodate a seniors housing component on a portion of the lot, as well as using the City’s additional lands to create a civic space, plaza and public park to complement the character of historic Laval Square.

One of the key goals of the project is the ability to replace the facility on the site using the currently vacant portion of the property as well as adjacent City-owned land in order to enable continuity of programs and services.

Next steps through 2018 include developing the project design, capital budget estimates, resourcing strategy, implementation schedule, business continuity planning and public consultation.
The new Place Maillardville is targeted to be open by 2021.
