Main Purpose & Function 
The City of Vancouver has been recognized throughout North America for innovation in sustainable rainwater management infrastructure, otherwise known as green infrastructure. The City adopted the Rain City Strategy in 2019, an ambitious and award-winning long-term plan to capture and treat 90% of Vancouver’s average annual rainfall through the implementation of green infrastructure on public and private property throughout the City. The Green Infrastructure Designer will be part of a high-functioning team that prepares green infrastructure designs for construction in right-of-ways and other public spaces. the The successful candidates will have a focus on drafting and drawing production, but they will also undertake a variety of other duties including some field work, research, technical, and administrative duties in the Green Infrastructure Implementation Branch.

Reporting to the Green Infrastructure Engineer, the EAIII Green Infrastructure Designer will work in close collaboration with engineers, landscape architects, planners, and horticulturists to create world-class designs.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Under supervision of the Green Infrastructure Engineer and Landscape Architect, the successful candidate will:
  • Develop conceptual, intermediate, and final designs of moderate or higher complexity using AutoCAD
  • Create plan sets for various project stages including issue for final construction and post-construction as-built drawings using AutoCAD
  • Prepare specification and contract packages
  • Update green infrastructure asset data inventories and GIS as-built information
  • Communicates with stakeholders, engineers and senior staff to develop designs according to design standards and engineering principles.
  • Prepares research, technical studies, reports and presentations on topics of moderate complexity, including undertaking relevant field observations and notes and verifying accuracy of the content.
  • May act as a technical liaison to partner groups, such as Planning and Development Services and other Engineering Services Branches.
  • Supports the development and enhancement of City design guidelines, drafting standards and overall design consistency; may take on specific assignments related to the research and development of detailed design guidelines and/or standards.
  • Performs tasks related to green infrastructure monitoring, including data collection, data processing, and analysis.
  • Creates maps, graphics, and presentations for internal and external communication, including work with GIS software such as MapInfo or ArcGIS and graphic programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and PowerPoint.
  • Performs general administrative duties including data entry, taking meeting minutes, taking and organizing photos.
  • May oversee junior staff for specific tasks and/or projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented with post-secondary education in engineering technology, transportation, or landscape architecture or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Related experience in the production of construction drawings is highly desirable.
 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Moderate to highly skilled in AutoCAD with practical experience preparing AutoCAD construction drawings is required (Applicants will be tested).
  • Ability to accurately read and interpret engineering drawings, including an understanding of the components of typical construction plan sets and packages.
  • Working knowledge of grading and drainage design and the principles of green infrastructure rainwater management.
  • Additional software skills in MapInfo, ArcGIS, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment, with little or no supervision, under tight deadlines, and sometimes outdoors in increment weather.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven interpersonal skills in establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with staff and external contacts.
  • Ability to work with and provide input into branch process changes.
  • A valid BC Driver’s License is an asset.
Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 – 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite.  At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.

The City’s COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination against COVID-19 is not required at this time. However, should circumstances change and the City deem it necessary to re-introduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties.
