CAD Support Specialist

Salary Range/ Wage Rate: PG 26 $2,984.10 - $3,526.40 bi-weekly

Our Water Services Department is seeking a CAD Support Specialist who will support our CAD/BIM (Building Information Modelling) team operations, including the drive towards continuous improvement in collaboration with our engineering and Information Management/Technology teams.
 
You are: an intermediate to advanced CAD Professional with extensive infrastructure experience and CAD/BIM programming expertise. You have several years of experience in developing automation tools (AutoCAD Scripts, LISP routines, Dynamo, etc.) for applications such as Autodesk’s AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit and Navisworks.
 
This role:

  • Coordinates computer assisted drafting system usage in the drafting branch, makes recommendations regarding system requirements including hardware and software, prepares technical specifications for tenders to acquire computer hardware and software, evaluates bids and recommends on purchase of same.
  • Develops, recommends and, upon approval, implements standard drafting procedures including configurations, drawing formats, filing and archiving, and plotting.
  • Performs technical drafting, preliminary layout and design work for a variety of water, sewer and drainage systems, including sewage treatment plants, water reservoirs, pumping stations and ancillary structures.
  • Organizes and coordinates drafting work on larger projects, liaises with the project engineer, consultants and others.
  • Assists superior with administrative matters of the drafting branch; assigns, checks and supervises the work of subordinate draftspersons; trains and assists subordinates and department staff with computerized applications and related software; acts in the absence of a superior within defined limits for short term absences.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of reports, records, files and other material related to the work.
  • Performs related work as required.


To be successful, you have:

  • Completion of the twelfth school grade, a Certificate of Technology in the Civil/Structural, Mechanical or Electrical fields plus advanced computer assisted drafting courses from a recognized Institute of Technology and considerable related experience, including some supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the software programs and hardware components of a computerized drafting system.
  • Considerable knowledge of computer assisted drafting standards, requirements and techniques.
  • Considerable specialized knowledge of drafting, layout, design and reproduction principles, methods and techniques as applied to the production of sketches, plans, charts and cost estimates.
  • Considerable knowledge of the departmental policies, procedures, practices, rules and regulations related to the work.
  • Working knowledge of engineering design principles and practices and of basic technical mathematics.
  • Working knowledge of construction methods and materials.
  • Ability to coordinate computer assisted drafting usage in the drafting branch, and to make recommendations regarding system requirements and the acquisition of computer hardware and software.
  • Ability to develop and, upon approval, implement standard drafting procedures.
  • Ability to perform mathematical computations that occur in drafting and surveying assignments.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications and produce engineering drawings to established standards from written and/or oral instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to supervise the work of one or more subordinates; to train and assist subordinates and department staff with computerized applications and related software; and to act for the supervisor within defined limits for short term absences as required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of reports, records, files and other materials related to the work.
  • Skill in the use of drafting and computing instruments or equipment. For example, AutoCAD Scripts, LISP routines, Dynamo, etc., for applications such as Autodesk’s AutoCAD, Civil3D, Revit and Navisworks tools.
