The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for a regular full-time Environmental Coordinator I to join our team of professionals in the Engineering Division, Water Resources and Environment Department. Reporting to the Manager, Water Resources and Environment, in this unionized position you will be responsible for implementing and coordinating environmental monitoring, protection and quality related to municipal works and operations, assisting with watercourse classification mapping, investigating complaints of environmental degradation, and assisting other Township Departments, agencies, and the public related to environmental issues.
- Respond to environmental inquiries and service requests, provide information to internal departments and the public
- Investigate environmental complaints, conduct site inspections, perform testing and research activities, interpret data and provide recommendations for environmental protection and quality
- Ensure compliance with environmental requirements; assist with compliance and bylaw enforcement
- Implement and coordinate environmental quality control reviews of municipal projects involving water quality, stream/habitat protection and effluent discharges
- Coordinate and implement municipal environmental programs such as invasive species control, watercourse classification mapping, nuisance mosquito control, beaver management, and long term monitoring of municipal projects
- Perform ground truthing, monitoring, and documentation of in-stream works such as driveway applications and ditching
- Assist the Fire Department and other municipal departments in responding to emergencies involving pollutants
- Prepare, provide, and present information and educational material to the public on environmental matters
- Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with community stewardship groups, not for profit agencies, other municipalities, government agencies, First Nations, and other stakeholders
- Perform other related work, as required
- Completion of post-secondary degree related to the work such as a Bachelor's of Science in Environmental Science/Engineering or related discipline, or graduation from an Institute of Technology with an Environmental Science/Engineering background, with 2-3 years’ work and field experience in environmental protection and monitoring
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, procedures, and equipment used in environmental monitoring and quality control programs, including surface water testing and sampling,
- Considerable knowledge of the policies, regulations, standards, by-laws and objectives governing environmental protection in British Columbia
- Ability to coordinate environmental consultants and contractors for municipal works projects
- Experience in municipal government will be considered an asset

The CUPE rate of pay for this position is $38.73 - $45.73 per hour (5 steps, 2020 rates) plus benefits. The hours of work are Monday to Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
