BC Local Government Job Posting Service

Chief Administrative Officer

The Sunshine Coast Regional District (www.scrd.ca) is the regional government serving the area’s approximate 30,000 year-round residents. Bordered by rugged mountains and the Salish Sea, the Sunshine Coast is situated on a peninsula in the traditional territory of the shíshálh and Skwxwú7mesh First Nations.  Offering a rare blend of natural beauty, rural ambience, and proximity to urban amenities, the region is both a popular tourist destination and a great place to live.

As the CAO of the SCRD, you will take responsibility for a robust portfolio of assets including a complex regional infrastructure, a skilled staff of over 200 regular employees, an annual operating budget of $45 million, and an engaged Board of Directors. This senior leadership position is responsible to the Board of Directors for the planning, administration, coordination, and delivery of a wide variety of services and for the ongoing management and effective utilization of the human, financial, and physical resources.

We're looking for a leader with integrity, respect, and diplomacy who will act with courage and conviction even under pressure.  Coupled with your degree in a relevant discipline, you bring eight (8) to ten (10) years of increasingly responsible executive management experience in the public sector, preferably in BC Regional Districts or municipalities, or managing a large municipal department.  Strong leadership and collaboration skills will be needed to bring together SCRD staff and politicians, other local governments, First Nations, senior governments, and business and community stakeholders.

As CAO, you will face challenges of a critical water shortage and pressures of developing strategic initiatives that meet the region's current and future needs in an era of unprecedented climate change.  You have the proven ability to actively anticipate, thoroughly assess, and effectively engage in the ongoing management of risk. You also have strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, as well as a proven track record of leading public consultation process, working in a unionized environment, managing staff and politicians, and finding innovative solutions to difficult problems.

Qualified candidates interested in exploring this exciting opportunity further, are invited to submit your resume in confidence quoting project SCRDCAO to: grantsmith@waterhousesearch.com.
