Carnegie Community Centre serves as an important resource in Vancouver’s diverse Downtown Eastside. Patrons participate in educational, recreational, cultural and social programming; enjoy the delicious low cost meals offered at the cafeteria; or simply enjoy the Centre as the “living room of the Downtown Eastside".

Main Purpose and Function
Reporting to the Security Coordinator and Manager, Community Centre Operations, this position supports the Centre’s mandate of providing a safe, welcoming, professional and accessible environment for patrons and staff. The incumbent does this through leadership in relationship building, patron engagement, and using a conflict-positive approach to resolving issues and concerns in the Centre within the framework of established guidelines. The Security Coordinator Assistant is a working supervisory position, with responsibilities in: supervising Security staff on shift; administrative work overseeing security operations; floor and Information Desk support; and supporting the safety and maintenance at the Carnegie Community Centre.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The incumbent will be responsible for day to day site/shift security operations aimed at achieving the Carnegie Community Centre’s mandate of a safe, welcoming, professional and accessible environment for patrons and staff; assisting with scheduling and payroll; monitoring the performance of security staff which includes providing direction to the Security Attendants and Information Clerks; assisting with Occupational Health and Safety and WorkSafe matters; and liaising with emergency services on security and medical related matters. The incumbent leads a variety of security incident related responses, including near miss and critical incident situations and with patrons who are barred from the Centre while keeping others safe. The incumbent exercises considerable independence in dealing with security issues by implementing security plans within the framework of established guidelines. The incumbent will also perform regular security functions including access control, patrols, program and event support, and clerical duties as required, including reporting building maintenance and repair requirements. The Security Coordinator Assistant works closely with the Security Coordinator to ensure security protocols and actions are appropriate for the circumstances.

Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by Security related courses and minimum 5 years supervisory experience in the Security field &/or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience and knowledge in working with socially and economically disadvantaged communities is required. Demonstrated excellence in verbal de-escalation, community engagement, effective relationship building, and conflict resolution are required.

The successful candidate will be one who has a high level of initiative and skill working both independently and with a team while multitasking in a fast paced environment. The incumbent will require a sound knowledge of departmental practices, policies & procedures and be proficient in using Microsoft Office suite.

Required Licenses, Certificates and Registrations
Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certification or ability to obtain.
BST Security Training Certificate or ability to obtain.

A Police Record Check clearance is a requirement of these positions. A Clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position.
