Deputy Fire Chief - Operations/Training

The City of Penticton offers a unique opportunity for the position of Deputy Fire Chief commencing approximately mid-spring 2019. Reporting to the Fire Chief, as the Deputy Fire Chief-Operations/Training will be a member of the Fire Department’s Management Team. They will be responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating the Operations Division activities. Effective delivery of day-to-day fire service operations will also fall under the Deputy Fire Chief’s accountabilities. This includes responding to emergency incidents as necessary where this individual will undertake leadership of incidents and undertake roles as determined by the Incident Command System.
The Deputy Fire Chief-Operations/Training will assist the Fire Chief in providing vision and leadership to the City of Penticton’s Fire Department. As a key member of the leadership team, other responsibilities may include administrative management, budgeting, training and strategic planning. This opening will ideally be filled by an incumbent who is operationally savvy in the fire service with robust experience in delivering and organizing fire service training programs.
A qualified candidate must have NFPA 1021 Fire Officer III, a Diploma in Fire Administration, Leadership, Business, or another related discipline. A minimum of five years’ progressively responsible and related experience, including three years in a supervisory role is required. Applicants must be trained and experienced Fire Fighters who have demonstrated excellent leadership skills. An equivalent combination of skills and experience may be considered. Applicants must have a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence with air brake endorsement and a satisfactory Police Information Check. The ideal candidate will be committed to routine participation in an array of professional development initiatives.
The Deputy Fire Chief-Operations/Training will possess effective time management and organizational skills to deliver objectives within an environment consisting of demanding timelines and changing priorities. Candidates with outstanding team-building and leadership skills will have a great deal of success in this position. With substantial experience working in a unionized setting, the ideal incumbent must be able to establish strong credibility with their peers. This individual will have excellent oral communication, public relation and interpersonal skills to interact with firefighters and officers, the Command Staff team and other key stakeholders.
