Reporting to the Janitor Leader, this is unskilled manual work in the cleaning and care of the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and premises. The Parks Janitor carries out routine attendant tasks in rendering assistance and services to patrons during scheduled events in and around Shadbolt, as well as performing a variety of repetitive cleaning, minor maintenance and/or building service tasks. Duties during assigned times include attending to routine requests from patrons for assistance and/or information relative to specific events or facilities usage, as well as patrolling buildings and adjacent grounds. Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes, buffs and polishes floors; vacuums floors; dusts, cleans and polishes furniture; cleans windows; replaces fluorescent tubes and light fixtures, empties ash trays and receptacles, replenishes washroom supplies, moves chairs, arranges tables and performs related tasks. Unlocks doors, adjusts heating controls, turns lights on and off to prepare building for daily use. Sweeps sidewalks, clears snow and picks up refuse. Prepares simple reports related to the work. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of up to Grade 12 with some related experience in janitorial or custodial work or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Sound knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial care and maintenance of buildings. Working knowledge of the general regulations and procedures governing facility operations. Ability to perform light manual work; to understand and execute oral instructions; and to deal courteously with the public. Skill in the use of a variety of tools used in the work. Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is required.

Skill testing may include either written or practical testing to ensure the candidate meets the requirements of the position.
