Parks Volunteer Coordinator

Position:
A regular part time Parks Volunteer Coordinator opportunity is available in the Parks and Trails Division of the Land Use Services Department. Reporting to the Manager, Parks and Trails, the Parks Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing and coordinating the volunteer program designed to support the Parks and Trails Division’s service delivery to electoral area community parks and regional parks. The incumbent provides support to Advisory Parks Commissions; prepares grant applications; receives and coordinates park use bookings and special event requests; and recruits, trains and supervises volunteers; organizes park events and activities.

Qualifications:
As the successful candidate you will have a degree or diploma in Organizational Leadership, Volunteer Management, Community Development or a related field and a minimum of three years of related experience including at least two years of volunteer management experience. Experience working with various community organizations, special interest groups, service organizations and volunteers, including the business community is also required and experience in a local government setting is considered an asset. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. Applicants must have a membership or eligibility for membership and involvement in Administrators of Volunteer Resources BC or a similar professional organization; First Aid Level 1 with CPR; and a Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License. A certificate in Volunteer Management is considered an asset. Knowledge in the following areas is required: current methods of recruiting, training, supervising and leading volunteers including knowledge of safe work practices, WorkSafeBC Act, regulations, standards and polices as they relate to volunteers; events management and booking administration, including facility registration software for facility and events booking; and extensive knowledge of and interest in the latest practices and trends in social media. Applicants should have a sound understanding of policies, procedures and protocols as they relate to special events, special use permits and volunteers. Knowledge of local and community events, associated trends and demographics is considered an asset. Applicants must have a demonstrated ability in: the leadership, coordination and development of volunteers and volunteer programs; establishing partnerships and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees, volunteers, service organizations, elected officials and the general public; working in a team environment as well as alone performing a wide variety of duties under minimal supervision; and effectively using social media for public and stakeholder engagement. Applicants must possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills and be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and social media platforms. You must be flexible and available to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays as required and have the physical strength, stamina and coordination to permit the performance of manual outdoor work in all types of weather.

Hours of Work:
This position is guaranteed 32 hours per week. Applicants must be flexible and able to work a varied schedule including weekdays, evenings and weekends to meet operational needs.

Salary:
This regular part time union position (CUPE Local 358) has a salary range in three steps - $33.38 - $34.33 - $35.37 per hour (2019 rates). A comprehensive benefits package is offered with this position.
