Leadhand Public Works / Road Maintenance Worker

You will also find some of the best powder or “pow”, as the locals call it, at the many ski destinations in the area. The local ski hill is a short 20 minute drive from downtown Nelson.  You will enjoy, hiking, mountain biking, snowmobiling, Nordic skiing, dirt biking, canoeing, kayaking and fishing - all just outside your own back door.  Nelson has a population of approximately 10,800 people and is the envy of many for its amazing culture, beauty and amenities.  

The City of Nelson is currently seeking to fill the position of LEADHAND PUBLIC WORKS / ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER.

This is a split position working as the LeadHand for Public Works from April 15 to October 15 and as a Road Maintenance Worker from October 16 to April 14th of each year.   The incumbent, under the direction of the Public Works and Parks Supervisor, will be responsible for the direction and organization of a crew which constructs, maintains and repairs City infrastructure while working as the Lead Hand.  As the Road Maintenance Worker, the incumbent will work under the supervision of the Public Works and Parks or Utilities Supervisor or the direction of the Lead Hands to provide Road Maintenance work that supports the construction, maintenance and repair of municipal infrastructure, with a focus on the municipal right-of-way.  Work in this position is guided by an overarching Public Works Department Goal to provide safe, smooth efficient roads and pedestrian routes.   

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Both)
  • Grade 12 or GED
  • Valid Class 3 BC DL with Air Endorsement
  • WHMIS

LEADHAND PUBLIC WORKS
  • Level I First Aid
  • 2 years recent related experience providing form setting, cement finishing and municipal construction
  • 2 years recent related experience providing direction to a crew

ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER
  • 3 years recent related experience

This position is part of the CUPE Local 339 Bargaining unit and offers a comprehensive benefits package along with a wage of $34.52 while working as a Lead Hand, Public Works and $31.71 while working as a Road Maintenance Worker.
