Position Overview:
This is technical and clerical work in reviewing plans and specifications accompanying applications for single and multi family, commercial and industrial building permits to review adherence to Municipal by law requirements. In addition, the incumbent coordinates the processing of permit applications, and assists in reviewing proposed projects. Considerable independent judgment and action is exercised in the technical aspects of the work, while unusual or controversial matters are discussed with a superior who reviews work performance in terms of conformance with established policy and procedures and the quality of services rendered to the department and external contacts.

Education & Experience:
Graduation from an Institute of Technology in Building Technology, plus sound related experience in the building construction industry or Municipal field, preferably Building Level 2 certification of the Building Officials Association of BC; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of the British Columbia Building Code, City regulations and by-laws and departmental policies and procedures governing the role of the plan review branch.
  • Sound knowledge of building construction practices and materials.
  • Working knowledge of ancillary documents referenced in the Building Code.
  • Ability to read plans and drawings, to interpret and apply the British Columbia Building Code and City regulations and by-laws and to suggest corrections and changes where required.
  • Ability to deal effectively and courteously with owners, builders, registered professionals, public and staff and to interpret and explain regulations and building requirements as necessary.
  • Ability to prepare reports, records and correspondence related to the work manually or using a computer terminal.

Licences & Certificates
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License
  • Membership with Building Officials Association of BC or BOABC is a requirement

Additional Information
Building Officials Association of British Columbia – Building Level 2 will be a requirement for this position by February 2021. Our successful candidate will have either attained a minimum of BOABC – Level 2 or have an education plan in place. This will be a condition of employment.
