Lighting Specialist
(Regular Full Time – One Position)

Position: The Arts & Culture Division of the Community Services Department is seeking an Assistant Technical Director – Lighting Specialist for regular full time position to work at the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre located at 2687 James Street, Duncan, BC. Reporting to the Theatre Technical Director, the Assistant Technical Director – Lighting Specialist is responsible for assisting the technical services of the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre. The Assistant Technical Director – Lighting Specialist works at various performances in the theatre assisting with the technical department maintenance, project planning, capital project requests, coordination and implementation for all technical requirements relating to the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre.

Qualifications: A university degree or diploma from a community college in Fine Arts specializing in stagecraft and theatre technical skills is required. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. A minimum of 3 years of practical field experience in all disciplines as a Theatre Technician is also required. Applicants must have the following valid certifications: Full Entertainment Electrical Ticket (FE), First Aid Level 1 with CPR, and a Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence. Applicants must have knowledge in the following areas: supervisory practices and techniques; the function, safe operation and maintenance of the lighting, sound, rigging, counterweight fly systems, staging, electrical and mechanical equipment associated with theatre operations; technical budgets and accountability; computer hardware and software including lighting plot programs, technical information and communications; and theatre cleaning and associated technical equipment maintenance procedures. In addition they must have knowledge and experience pertaining to the expectations and technical requirements of both professional touring groups and community amateur groups. Applicants must have the ability to: establish and maintain courteous, tactful, diplomatic working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the general public; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including the ability to solve problems and resolve interpersonal conflicts; lead, motivate and supervise employees in a respectful, proactive manner; schedule and manage projects and deadlines effectively; maintain accurate technical records; and schedule and supervise technical crews to be cost effective. Proficient computer skills with Microsoft and Mac operating systems are also required.

Salary: This is a regular full time (40 hours a week) union position (IATSE Local 168) with a wage of $28.89 per hour (2016 wage rate).
