Salary Based on Year of Call: Legal Counsel Level 2 : $121,030.09 - $156,960.01 annually (years of call 6-11) Legal Counsel Level 3 : $161,625.82 - $185,603.45 annually (years of call 12-18 and greater)
Deliver professional legal advice and assist as a general legal advisor with the Ministry of Attorney General.
The Ministry of Attorney General is the legal advisor to the government of British Columbia and is charged with ensuring that the administration of public affairs is carried out in accordance with the law. Legal Services Branch (LSB) supports the Ministry in fulfilling this mandate by serving as legal advisor to government in civil law matters. LSB provides legal advice to government and ensures that legal risks associated with government operations are reduced. LSB’s clients include all ministries of the government, Cabinet and certain public agencies.
You are able to ascertain your clients’ business objectives and provide relevant, creative and pragmatic legal assistance. You value building positive client relationships and working in a collegial, team-based environment. In addition to having a high level of organizational skills, you possess excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) and the ability to manage challenging files with competing priorities. You have excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to think strategically and creatively. You understand the role and responsibilities of the Attorney General.
This position advises the Financial Institutions Commission (FICOM), which houses the regulators of credit unions, insurance companies, trust companies, registered pension plans, and mortgage brokers, and the Office of the Superintendent of Real Estate which regulates the marketing of real estate developments and unlicensed trading services in the province. This position will be required to conduct licensing, disciplinary and enforcement hearings primarily for the Registrar of Mortgage Brokers, Financial Institutions Commission, and the Superintendent of Real Estate. Barrister services with respect to other administrative law hearing work may also be required. In addition to providing barrister services, from time to time, some opinion and advice work is required, relating primarily to statutory interpretation, related legislative initiatives, and application of policy and advice on when and how regulatory action should be taken..
Qualifications for this role include:
- A law degree and must be a member in good standing, or eligible to become a member, of the Law Society of British Columbia.
- Legal Counsel Level 2: From 6th to 11th year of call.
- Legal Counsel Level 3: More than 12 years of call.
- A minimum of 6 years of recent experience as a practicing lawyer.
- A minimum of 6 years recent legal advocacy experience (experience and knowledge of representing parties at hearings before administrative tribunals, disciplinary bodies and/or criminal prosecutions).
- experience in the area of administrative law; and
- previous legal representational experience in the real estate, or a financial sector regulatory setting.
