Engineering Assistant 2 – Traffic Management
This role will include investigating, evaluating, making recommendations, preparing plans to implement the recommendations, and responding to requests from the public, external agencies, and internal staff for changes to traffic control and improving road safety, including signage and pavement markings, for all transportation modes. It will include assisting in the research and development of practices and procedures for the use and installation of signage, pavement markings, and other forms of traffic control, including reviewing, inventorying, and preparing plans for improving existing controls.
Applicants will be expected to:
- Provide support in all aspects of urban transportation work undertaken within the section including transit, walking and cycling
- Assist in the preparation, development, design, and review of signage and pavement marking plans and programs for transportation projects for all modes
- Perform field inspections, undertake technical assessments, and collect and analyze data related to signage and pavement marking installation, sightlines, road safety, and traffic operation
- Liaise with and respond to inquiries from consultants, contractors, internal staff, and the public
- Effectively communicate both orally and in writing
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with team members, Transportation Division staff, and other City departments
- Assist in research projects, develop concepts, and make recommendations
- Assist in the management of projects such as the development of specifications and standard drawings for signage and pavement markings
Applicants will be required to have the following:
- Completion of a one-year certificate in a discipline of Engineering Technology relevant to the position from a recognized post-secondary institution with 3 years engineering experience with a demonstrated record of technical knowledge, skills and ability or an equivalent combination of related training and experience; OR
- Completion of a two year diploma in a discipline of Engineering Technology relevant to the position from a recognized post-secondary institution with exposure to relevant engineering work.
- Superior organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written plus a sound knowledge of urban transportation policy, regulations and legislation.
- An ability to operate computer equipment and software as applied to the work performed and proficiency in Microsoft Office is required.
- You must possess the ability to communicate and deal effectively with a wide range of individuals and groups including the development community, the general public, internal municipal staff and external private and government agencies.
- A valid Driver’s License
