Pottery Instructor – Century House

HOURS OF WORK: Tuesdays, 12:30 to 9:00pm, 8 weeks Fall 2018; Winter and Spring 2019 (may change season to season)
SALARY Range: Instruction Rate:$ 30.86 per hour; Technical Rate: $23.36 per hour; Prep Rate: $17.36 per hour (plus 12% in lieu of all benefits, vacation and statutory holidays)

The City of New Westminster is seeking an enthusiastic, friendly and outgoing individual to teach pottery at Century House’s pottery studio. Three classes are planned for the Fall, they include: Children 6 to 12 years, Older Adults 50+ and Adults 19+.
Classes are divided between focusing on introducing new techniques and offering technical support whilst people work on their projects. The classes focus on hand building. Projects should focus on introducing skills such as coil building, pinching, slab building, extruding, glazing and decorating techniques. As the sole pottery instructor you will also be responsible for managing studio tasks such as kiln operation, mixing glazes, maintaining inventory and ordering clay/underglazes/glaze chemicals.
Requirements include:
  • Adept ceramic artist with active arts practice
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts or 4 years’ experience working in ceramics
  • Experience working with cone 6 clays and glazes
  • Competent loading/unloading and firing an electric kiln
  • Previous teaching experience (at least 1 year)
