The Animal Shelter Attendant performs manual and animal care work at the City’s Animal Shelter.  The incumbent of this class feeds, handles and cares for all impounded dogs and cats; cleans and disinfects kennels and cages, provides orientation and direction to volunteers, and performs a variety of routine clerical and office support tasks.  Work is performed under general supervision and some independence of judgement and action is exercised within established operating policies and procedures.  Work performance is reviewed in terms of results and achievement of desired objectives.

Requirements include: Sound knowledge of methods, practices and procedures for the care and feeding of dogs and cats; Sound knowledge of the procedures, rules and regulations related to the work; Working knowledge of the medications and routine medical treatments for injured or ill dogs and cats; Ability to carry out routine tasks in feeding and caring for dogs and cats; Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public; Ability to understand and carry out work according to oral instructions and to work with minimal supervision; Ability to provide orientation and direction to volunteers; Ability to complete non-complex forms and reports; and the ability to lift and carry bulky objects such as bags of feed, hoses and large dogs.
Successful candidates will have a Driver’s license for the Province of British Columbia, completion of the 12th school grade, plus sound experience in working with animals, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Additionally, the ideal candidate will have education and work experience in Animal Care & Control.

Candidates must be available to work 21 hours per week on evenings and weekends.

A CUPE hourly rate of $24.81-29.16 per hour plus 12% in lieu of benefits is offered.
