Wastewater Operator III 

Two (2) Year Term Position

 
The District of Invermere has an opening for an Wastewater Operator III in the Public Works Department for a minimum two (2) year term position.   This position may evolve into a permanent fulltime position at a later date.
 
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
This position will be part of the Public Works staff.  Under the general supervision of the Manager of Public Works and the Public Works Foreman, the Wastewater Operator III performs skilled preventative maintenance, repairs, inspections and operational work on wastewater systems. Sound knowledge of departmental procedures and policies, and municipal and provincial regulations is required.
 
Applicants must possess sound communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.  This position will organize, perform, and record work. Work will involve cooperation with contractors and with outside agencies.  Written and verbal communication with municipal service clients is required and must be performed with tact, diplomacy and professionalism. Working knowledge of WCB regulations with respect to confined space entry and other applicable areas is required.   
  1. Monitor the aeration lagoons, the rapid infiltration basins and the blower building regularly; and maintain these works.
  2. Monitor the application of approved chemicals that are required to maintain wastewater quality.
  3. Maintain accurate and complete records of effluent flows, wastewater quality and equipment hours.
  4. Maintain the sewerage infrastructure (e.g. lift pumps, manholes).  Ensure an adequate inventory of parts and materials related to the wastewater treatment system.
  5. Inspect connections to and disconnections from the municipal utilities and report any unacceptable installations to the Public Works Foreman.  Maintain accurate and complete records of such installations.
  6. Keep abreast of new practices, procedures, techniques and innovative methods pertaining to wastewater treatment systems.  As required, draft written procedures for implementation by the municipality.
  7. As required, assist in the maintenance and repair of the water supply and distribution systems.
  8. Perform related duties as assigned by the Public Works Foreman.
  9. Willingness to train in other areas of the municipality's operations from time to time for possible future promotions or advancement as outlined in sections 8.17 and 8.18 of the Collective Agreement.  Willingness to supervise and train staff in the operation of the wastewater treatment system as required.
  10. Willingness to assume the duties and responsibilities of the Lead Hand from time to time
 
This position is within C.U.P.E. 2982 bargaining unit and applicants should be familiar with the “Wastewater Operator III” job description within the collective agreement.    
 
NOTE  The duties listed are not set forth for the purpose of limiting the assignment of work and are not to be construed as a complete list of duties normally to be performed under a job title or those duties temporarily performed outside the normal line of work.  Other duties may be assigned from time to time and at the discretion of the Manager of Public Works or the Public Works Foreman that are outside the typical duties of this position
 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS 
  1. Three years municipal experience with Level 1 certification in wastewater treatment and collection systems.
  2. Thorough knowledge of WCB Regulations as related and appropriate.
  3. Completion of Grade 12 plus successful completion of the British Columbia Water and Wastewater Operators Certification Program.
  4. Valid Class 5 BC Drivers License.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
  1. Valid Class 3 BC Drivers License with air brake endorsement.
 
This position is within CUPE 2982 bargaining unit and earns $30.24 as a probationary rate with a rate of $31.09 upon completion of the 90-day trial period as described in the CUPE Local 2982 Collective Agreement.
