School District No. 71 (Comox Valley) is inviting applications for the position of Secretary-Treasurer. We are seeking an experienced, dynamic and progressive business leader to take on this important and challenging leadership role. This individual is a creative problem-solver and possesses exceptional interpersonal, communication and public relations skills.
As Secretary-Treasurer, you will be an integral member of the senior leadership team. You will report to and work with the Superintendent of Schools to achieve the Board of Education’s mission and mandate. You will oversee all aspects of the district’s financial matters, including HR/negotiations, accountability for the information technology, facilities, operations, and maintenance departments as well as the legal and general business activities of the district. As corporate officer, you will provide guidance and support for board operations and governance.
As the successful candidate, you will:
- possess a recognized accounting designation (CPA);
- possess a deep knowledge of the financial and operational systems that support learning in British Columbia school districts;
- understand provincial legislation and related compliance requirements;
- demonstrate proven leadership and strategic planning as a senior financial manager to support the government’s educational transformation agenda of the province;
- demonstrate outstanding personal and professional ethical standards;
- engage with and work effectively with partner organizations;
- possess an entrepreneurial spirit and an innovative problem solving style, and
- possess experience working with elected officials.
School District 71 (Comox Valley) is a positive, progressive and growing school district located on the east coast of Vancouver Island. It is located on the traditional territory of the K’ómoks First Nation. Within the Comox Valley is the City of Courtenay, the Town of Comox and the Village of Cumberland, each providing their own unique services and community cultures. The Comox Valley is a desirable place to live with great ocean beaches, golf, skiing, hiking, swimming and boating. In addition, the community has strong and vibrant
arts and cultural programs.
We work closely with our educational partners to develop responsible, compassionate citizens and successful lifelong learners. Over 1400 employees work to provide a comprehensive educational program to approximately 8,500 students from kindergarten to Grade 12 in our 15 elementary schools, 1 middle school, 3 secondary schools, 2 alternate schools, and 1 distributed learning school. The district’s annual operating budget is approximately $100 million.
