Utility Operator

The District of Lake Country is looking for an experienced Utility Operator to join our team.
The Utility Operator at the District of Lake Country performs utility operations relating to the safe and efficient operation of District Water Systems.  Utility operations include construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of water supply and distribution systems, pump, pressure regulation, pressure release, air and/or vacuum valves, fire hydrants, treatment facilities, hydro plant, intake structures, dams, reservoirs, and appurtenances.  Utility Operators may also perform other related duties working with other District departments as required. 
In addition, the Utility Operator will provide technical support services required to meet Provincial requirements for a Level 4 water distribution system.  Our vision for this position is to provide technical and operational support to the Utility Superintendent and the Water Department generally.
Duties involve maintaining, operating and inspecting water pumping stations, treatment facilities, and assist in the operation of regulating pressure reducing stations; record keeping, changing recorder charts, visual inspections, pressure, flow and other readings; regular maintenance of mechanical equipment, such as lubricating glands and bearings, maintaining intake screens, motors and pumps, and changing chlorine tonners and cylinders, and maintaining hypochlorite and gas chlorinators as required. The position works in a fast-paced environment and requires a high degree of technical problem solving and good interpersonal and communication skills. The position works in a fast-paced and potentially hazardous environment and requires a high degree of tact and discretion. The normal work week is 40 hours, Monday to Friday, with rotating weekend shifts and on call pager duties.
The preferred candidate will have completed certificates in Water System Distribution Water Operator EOCP, and eligibility to obtain Water Operator EOCP certification plus hold a Chlorine Handler certificate. A minimum of one year related experience with water systems, preferably in a local government setting plus a valid B.C. Driver’s License.  The hourly rate of pay for this unionized position will be based on the level of qualifications in EOCP and years experience.
