Call for concepts to expand the Designated Communities stream of Reaching Home: Canada's Homelessness Strategy

As part of the National Housing Strategy, the Government of Canada announced a total investment of $2.2 billion for homelessness over 10 years to expand and extend funding for federal homelessness programming.  By 2021-22, this will double annual investments compared to 2015-16.  Reaching Home will replace the existing Homelessness Partnering Strategy and will officially launch April 1, 2019. Under Reaching Home, the Designated Communities will be expanded to up to six new communities outside of Quebec and the territories. The first step for this process is a competitive call for concepts. Communities outside of Quebec and the territories with a population size of 25,000 and over who demonstrate a need for long-term stable federal homelessness funding are encouraged to apply. Through this rigorous process, successful communities will be invited in the spring 2019 to develop and submit a full project proposal.   An application process has been outlined to assist eligible communities to complete their submissions. Completed submissions with attachments can be sent to hkd-dci@hrsdc-rhdcc.gc.ca or mailed. The deadline for applications is March 8, 2019, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.

Barrhead Regional Aquatic Centre Solar Installation
In late 2015 the Town of Barrhead broke ground on their new Regional Aquatic Centre with the help of Clark Builders. While the Town showed strong environmental leadership in the design with geothermal energy systems, Clark Builders presented the opportunity to take it one step further with the implementation of a roof top solar system in January of 2017.    The 145.5kW solar array utilizes a combination of both south facing and east/west facing modules in order to maximize energy generation and is tied to the grid so that any extra energy produced can be utilized by the adjoining hockey rink.  A monitor mounted in the lobby displays generation information to the public to help the entire community be involved and take pride in the project.  This project went before Council more than once to ensure that it would align with the Town’s values of sustainability, fiscal responsibility, and regional leadership. Smaller municipalities may not feel they are able to participate in projects of this scope. The Town of Barrhead is a tremendous example to organizations of similar size and resources that projects like this are absolutely achievable and not solely reserved for large scale urban municipalities.

The Town of Barrhead submitted a nomination to the 2018 CAMA Awards of Excellence Program under the Environment Award- Population Under 20,000 Category.  If you would like to see their full submission please visit the CAMA Member's Section, Awards of Excellence/Best Practices section and search "Town of Barrhead". If you would like more information please contact Katharina Hueggenberg at 780-305-4359 or khueggenberg@barrhead.ca
Energy Code Adoption - The City of Calgary
When Alberta adopted NECB/Alberta Building Code 9.36, it had its first codified energy efficiency legislation. This represented a huge leap forward in environmental protection, and equally large changes to building code approvals and design and construction practice.  To help industry adapt, The City of Calgary undertook a multi-prong approach to develop materials, submission guidelines, and processes to ensure that the new codes are both understood and enforced. Among the most important roles The City undertook was an exhaustive education program. This included over forty presentations, from five to 200+ attendees covering how to use and apply the new energy codes, technical items, and resources made available by the City of Calgary to help applicants in this process.  The latter includes forms and worksheets, user’s guides, and videos on the energy codes. These are found on a dedicated website - www.calgary.ca/energycodes - and are freely available to the public and other municipalities across the province, as it was recognized that many would not have the resources or expertise to develop their own. Even today, many smaller centres use the forms and resources created to help their local industry meet the energy codes.

The City of Calgary submitted a nomination to the 2018 CAMA Awards of Excellence Program under the Environment Award- Population Over 100,000 Category.  If you would like to see their full submission please visit the CAMA Member's Section, Awards of Excellence/Best Practices section and search "City of Calgary". If you would like more information please contact Justin Pockar at 403.268.2250 or justin.pockar@calgary.ca
