ICMA Presented Eco-Friendly Urbanization Summit in China
ICMA partnered with the City of Yangzhou, China and the ICMA China Center to present the first ICMA International Regional Summit on May 11-15, 2014 in Yangzhou.  The summit, “Eco-Friendly Urbanization,” focused on the challenges of sustainable development in a rapidly urbanizing world—challenges facing China, the United States, and many other countries.

The summit brought together individuals from ten countries for presentations, panel discussions, site visits, and keynote sessions highlighting international perspectives, management issues, and approaches for incorporating sustainable development priorities into local government strategies.

ICMA President Simon Farbrother, City Manager, Edmonton, delivered a welcome address and ICMA Executive Director Robert J. O’Neill, Jr., delivered a keynote on urbanization in the United States and best practices in sustainable development, based on research conducted by ICMA’s Center for Sustainable Communities.

CAMA Past President Jean Savard also had the opportunity to attend the ICMA’s International Committee Meeting which was held in conjunction with the Summit.  Along with a keynote address from Committee Chair Clay Pearson, City Manager, Pearland, Texas, discussions took place on various programs in other countries such as Mexico, South Asia, and India along with best practices that can be shared among all affiliate partners.

In 2010, Wetaskiwin, AB began the process of rejuvenating its Main Street.  The need to replace underground infrastructure allowed the City to make streetscape improvements and revitalize its downtown.  Genivar (now WSP) engineering was engaged to carry out conceptual design and detailed construction plan.  Extensive public and stakeholder consultation was carried out beginning in 2010 using the theme “Your Street – Your Design.”
Municipal leaders were quick to see the vision of incorporating modern design principles to enhance pedestrian safety, security, environmental sustainability, and accessibility, while promoting a fun, business-friendly atmosphere in the downtown.  Community support for the project gradually increased.
Construction was completed in two phases in 2012 and 2013.  The City minimized the impact of construction by requiring contractors to maintain barrier free pedestrian access to businesses, working with businesses one on one to coordinate schedules, and by advertising that businesses on the street remained open with pedestrian access and parking in close proximity.
The result is a bold and innovative redesign, which has created a street that feels safe, secure, and welcoming.  It includes wider sidewalks, trees, planters, benches, signage, targeted security lighting and LED Dark Sky compliant lighting.  The street is more accessible, has more efficient traffic flow and is easily closed down for civic events.  Financial support was obtained through the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI).

En 2010, Wetaskiwin, en Alberta, a amorcé le rajeunissement de sa rue principale. La nécessité de remplacer l'infrastructure souterraine était l’occasion d’embellir cette rue et de revitaliser le centre-ville.

La Ville a fait appel à Genivar (entreprise de génie-conseil aujourd’hui WSP) pour une revue de définition conceptuelle et un plan de construction détaillé. Début 2010, une vaste consultation du public et des parties intéressées a eu cours sous le thème « Votre rue – Votre concept ».

Les dirigeants municipaux ont compris qu’il fallait intégrer les principes de conception moderne pour améliorer la sécurité des piétons, la durabilité environnementale et l’accessibilité, sans négliger la création d’une ambiance agréable et propice aux affaires au centre-ville. L’appui de la communauté pour ce projet a peu à peu augmenté.

La construction s’est faite en deux phases (2012 et 2013). La Ville a minimisé les effets des travaux en exigeant que les entrepreneurs conservent un accès piétonnier facile aux commerces, coordonnent les échéances individuellement avec les entreprises et annoncent que les commerces restaient ouverts, facilement accessibles à pied ou en voiture, avec stationnement à proximité.

Le résultat? Une rue agréable et sécuritaire, aménagée de façon audacieuse et novatrice. Dotée de trottoirs élargis, d’arbres, de bacs à fleurs, de bancs, d’éclairage de sécurité ciblé et respectueux du ciel nocturne (DEL), d’une signalisation et de panneaux indicateurs renouvelés, la rue est désormais plus accessible, la circulation plus fluide et plus facile à fermer pour des événements.
Le projet a bénéficié du soutien financier de l’Initiative de durabilité municipale.

  • Major Capital Facilities Strategy – an innovative $120 million plan for the replacement of several major community facilities. 
  • The Richmond Olympic Experience – an extraordinary cultural amenity, located within the Richmond Olympic Oval and the only member of the international Olympic Museum Network.
CPMG is a highly experiential “made for Richmond” learning-process.  Through the CAO’s strong commitment to innovate and exemplify agility within a public sector environment, CPMG has emerged as a highly successful leadership / succession / strategic initiatives program.
