e-Brief December 20, 2018
Canada Nature Fund

Nature is vital to Canadian’s social and economic well-being and contributes to our national identity, culture and history. Canada is the custodian of significant share of the world’s natural capital, providing ecological goods and services . Yet Canada’s nature is declining: 520 species at risk, habitats are being reduced: 70% of prairie wetlands, 99% of tallgrass prairie, 80% of fescue prairie, 80% of Carolinian forest.  The Federal Government has launched an initiative to cost share with provincial-territorial-indigenous-municipal governments the establishment of ‘protected’ lands for the conservation of biodiversity. Target 1 of the Canadian Biodiversity Strategy is to have 17% of its terrestrial and inland waters ‘protected’ by 2020, in keeping with international commitments under the Convention on Biodiversity.

There will be a webinar on the Challenge Fund that is being offered to the Canadian Federation Of Municipalities on Friday December 21 at 230 pm Atlantic Time. CAMA members are welcome to join in and learn more about the available opportunities.  The deadlines are January 31, 2018 for submitting an expression of interest and March 15, 2019 for submitting a full proposal.

Asset Management support for new Elected Officials

Many provinces in Canada have been going through election cycles this Fall, and with many CNAM members representing municipalities who need to engage in new Elected Officials or Councils with high turnover, we wanted to prepare this eBlast with some content that will support you in your asset management communications with your senior stakeholders. This content is also relevant for CNAM's non-municipal members who might face similar challenges with a change in senior leadership at their organization.

Please forward this to any elected officials or colleagues you think might benefit from these resources!

Communities are being challenged to make the best possible decisions with scarce resources for both today's users and future generations. Planning for infrastructure renewals, growth, and new demands amidst increasing service expectations, risk exposure, and financial challenges can put elected officials and community staff in a difficult position. Asset management can help.

The Canadian Network of Asset Managers (CNAM) is the Association of public infrastructure asset management in Canada. Our government and private sector members develop policy, tools and technologies which improve the level of service for public infrastructure assets in every province and territory across Canada. CNAM shares that knowledge with other members and stakeholders through our CNAMpedia online resource, the Annual Conference, Webinars and various Board committees and events.

CNAM has developed several resources to support people who are new to infrastructure asset management, with materials being developed in both English and French, that target communities who are new to asset management and are starting their journey.

AM101 Booklet

CNAM's Asset Management 101 Booklet provides the What, Why, and How on infrastructure asset management for your community Infrastructure asset management. It's a great short booklet that will help you get your head around the basics. Printed copies are also available.
Go to www.cnam.ca/NewToAM to download for your FREE electronic copy in English or French.

Webinars, including a panel with Elected Officials
CNAM has developed webinars to provide listeners with a presentation of some of the key content noted above to help build their awareness of asset management, as well as featuring a live Question & Answers segment at each webinar.

In February 2018, we recorded a session specifically for Elected Officials that featured a live Panel Discussion with three elected municipal officials from across Canada.

Go to www.cnam.ca/NewToAM to access our library of webinar recordings.

CNAM regularly host webinars on various aspects of asset management - our latest webinar, in October, 2018 explored Levels of Services!   Visit www.cnam.ca to signup to our mailing list for information on future webinars!

1-day AM Workshops and Remote Virtual Classrooms
CNAM is running Infrastructure Asset Management Aiswareness Workshops across Canada. The sessions are appropriate for Elected Officials and Municipal / Organization Staff of all levels who will leave the workshops with:
  • a better understanding of what asset management is,
  • why it should be undertaken and the benefits to your community,
  • what it entails and how to begin implementation with some tangible steps.
There will be a limited number of face to face sessions, but several remote virtual classrooms for anyone to join. We can also arrange private sessions for your organization and staff. Please visit  www.cnam.ca/NewToAM for more information.
