Northern Sunrise County Wins National Municipal Environmental Award

Left to Right:  Marie-Hélène Lajoie, CAMA Past President; Peter Thomas, Chief Administrative Officer, Northern Sunrise County; Jean-Marc Nadeau, 2017 CAMA Awards Chair/CAMA Board Representative for Manitoba & Saskatchewan

Northern Sunrise County, AB has received national recognition for its Fire Hall Solar Project from the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA).  The County was presented with the 2017 CAMA Environmental Award, in the Under 20,000 population category, during CAMA’s national conference in Gatineau, QC.

CAMA is pleased to recognize the environmental excellence demonstrated by Northern Sunrise County with its solar project.  This project builds on the multi-use potential of municipal infrastructure to develop a project that makes economic, social and environmental sense.

The County completed their unique solar power project at the St. Isidore / Three Creeks Fire Hall In November 2016.  Built from 88 solar panels, the 22.5 kilowatt project is one the largest of its kind at a Canadian fire hall.  The County expects to generate 29,497 kilowatt hours and prevent 17,698 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions every year.

Northern Sunrise County is a rural municipality with a population of 1,891.  It is located beside Peace River, about 500 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.

The system is grid-tied to three phase power using a string of micro inverters.  It serves the fire hall and feeds power into the local distribution network.  The panels can easily be adjusted to maximize sunlight during the year, allowing the $72,500 project, offset with a $16,325 grant from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre, to pay for itself within seven years.  The County thanks the Government of Alberta for their support through the centre.

An active monitoring system lets County staff check how much power is being generated daily by each panel. Results have been positive to date and will rise significantly during spring and summer to meet the annual project targets.

For additional information on this project, contact Peter Thomas, CAO, 780-624-0013 or by email at [email protected]
