Registration is open until May 13th, 2016 for CAMA's 45th Annual Conference being held in Winnipeg, Manitoba from May 30 - June 1, 2016 at the Delta Winnipeg and Winnipeg Convention Centre. The registration fee for members, non-members, and municipal interns includes all Conference sessions, tradeshow, opening reception, breakfasts, refreshment breaks, lunches, Casual Night Out, the President’s Dinner and the hospitality suites.  Additional tickets to the Casual Night Out ($115.00) and the President’s Dinner ($125.00) can be purchased for companions not participating in the full Companion Program.
 
An additional fee will be charged for the Study Tours and the speaker session on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The registration fee for retired members includes all Conference sessions, tradeshow, opening reception, breakfasts, refreshment breaks, Casual Night Out, and the hospitality suites.  At an additional cost, tickets can be purchased to the lunches ($40.00), the Study Tours/Wednesday afternoon speaker session, and the President’s Dinner ($125.00).

Overflow Hotel

CAMA has arranged for a room block at the Radisson Hotel Winnipeg Downtown (288 Portage Avenue) which is located approximately three blocks from the RBC Convention Centre and the Delta Winnipeg, and is accessible via an indoor walkway.

The special Conference rates are as follows for a single and double rate:
  • Superior: $189.00
  • Business Class: $219.00
  • Suites: $249.00

**Please note that the above rates are subject to 8% PST, 5% GST and 5% Accommodation Tax which is subject to GST. These rates are for single or double occupancy. Each extra person sharing a room over and above two adults will be charged an additional $15.00 per night. There will be no charge for children up to and including the age of 18 years who share with their parents.

Election for the 2016-2017 CAMA Board of Directors – New Brunswick and Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Nunavut

During our recent election process for the 2016-2017 CAMA Board of Directors there were two positions available:  one for New Brunswick and one for Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Nunavut.
 
In accordance with the requirements of the CAMA by-laws, I wish to advise the membership that the 2016 Nominating Committee has received the following nominations for the position of New Brunswick that is available on the CAMA Board of Directors for the 2016-2017 year:

CAMA is a national organization and when elections are held, every Regular Member, regardless of the Province you work in, votes for the candidate of your choice in each respective jurisdiction.  You are therefore eligible to vote for one nominee for New Brunswick and one nominee for Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Nunavut.
 
Further information regarding the procedures for voting will be distributed electronically to all CAMA members eligible to vote, prior to the commencement of the voting period. 
 
Please also note that only CAMA members in good standing with membership fees paid for the current fiscal year (April 1st, 2016 to March 31st, 2017) will be eligible to vote.

CAMA Provides Input into Canada`s Federal Funding Programs for Municipal Infrastructure
The Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA) provided a Position Paper and a series of administrative recommendations as input on Federal Funding Programs for Municipal Infrastructure.

Don MacLellan, President of CAMA and General Manager of Community Safety Services for the City of Moncton, NB, presented the association’s formal position paper to Jeff Moore, the Assistant Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Canada on March 29th, 2016.   This marks the second time the association has submitted a formal position paper regarding infrastructure to the Government of Canada.

CAMA presented sixteen priorities, which were identified by the association’s members as having a high importance from an administrative standpoint. These include:
  1. Clear Names for Programs.
  2. Clear Criteria.
  3. Clear definition of municipal infrastructure.
  4. Predictability of funding.
  5. Ease of application and reporting.
  6. Includes all costs.
  7. Removal of “stacking” provisions.
  8. Improved project cash flows.
  9. Advance funding.
  10. Long range funding for some projects.
  11. Flexibility.
  12. Absence of additional criteria from the provinces.
  13. Does not require replication of existing municipal checks and balances.
  14. Focus on municipal mandates.
  15. Includes all municipal infrastructure assets.
  16. Direct involvement by municipalities in program development and design.

Free Online Safety Training Tool Assists First Responders With Flammable Liquid Emergencies
A free online safety tool endorsed by Transport Canada will help first responders assess flammable liquid emergencies and respond in a safe and appropriate manner through knowing who to contact and what resources are available.    The new tool was developed by Enform, Canada’s oil and natural gas safety association, and was funded in part by the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, in partnership with the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs, and Transport Canada.


Eleven Communities Across Canada Go Wild for Nature
 
WWF-Canada is pleased to announce new recipients of the Go Wild Community Grants presented by TELUS program.  Go Wild projects are based on ideas that protect, restore, monitor, educate and celebrate nature. Some of this year's inspiring ideas include projects that restore habitats, protect local species, educate the public and inspire people to connect to and conserve nature in their communities.  Projects will be implemented and run until June 30.

The Go Wild program awarded grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 to support a project's program including staff, equipment, materials, field and supplies costs, documentation and communications costs.   WWF will be accept new ideas for Go Wild in the spring application period April 5 - May 13, 2016.

Fall 2015 Go Wild Community Grants recipients:
  • Richmond, B.C., McNair Secondary Eco-Marlins Rookery Project. The restoration of nesting habitats through community backyard habitat workshops and the installation of 150 bird and bat homes.
  • Petty Harbour, Nfld. , Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium Marine Discovery Lab & Coast to Coast Classroom Program. A coast-to-coast marine touch-tank discovery lab will connect and teach students in British Columbia and Newfoundland classrooms about marine life and sustainability solutions.
  • Annapolis Royal, N.S., Clean Annapolis River Project Youth Leading Environmental Change.Hands-on education of rural youth on how to monitor species at risk and the restoration of degraded aquatic habitats. Youth will lead the project as environmental ambassadors.
  • Dartmouth, N.S., Christine Ward-Page, Maynard Lake  Give it a chance! Painting storm drains and installing educational signs will help Maynard Lake, the dumping grounds for paint cans and garbage, to thrive. The impact will be celebrated with a nature event and supported through weekly lake monitoring.
  • Capreol, Ont., Wahnapitae First Nation Build-A-Bat-House program. With the decline in bat populations on the reserve, community awareness and action will be created for three endangered bat species through build-a-bat house day and education to help in community reporting for a longitudinal study.
  • Peterborough, Ont., Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre Returning baby turtles to the wild program. Treating over 800 turtles each year, Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre will celebrate and educate the public while inviting everyone to join as they release the turtles at two locations.
  • Toronto, Shoresh Jewish Environmental Program Bela Farm Bee Sanctuary. Across 20 acres, this Toronto bee sanctuary will help to restore Ontario's native pollinator populations with the public planting of over two million native plants in a three year period.
  • Sainte-Flavie, Que., Parc de la rivière Mitis Awareness and nature restoration program. Theproject will carry out an inventory of River Mitis Park and Mitis Bay species with the help of the community.
  • Ville-Marie, Que., Organisme de bassin versant du Témiscamingue Adopt a River activity. Afteradopting a local river, youth will get outside and hands-on by studying the fish community. These activities will allow kids to reconnect to nature and foster even more desire to protect it.
  • Regina, Sask., Wascana Centre Authority Wascana Centre's Pollinator Paradise. Creation of native prairie pollinator garden and educational materials, welcoming public and school nature walks.
