Call for Speakers: ICMA 2016 Annual Conference

Dear ICMA International Members, Affiliates, and Friends:

I am writing to request your help in broadening the international content of ICMA’s 102nd Annual Conference, which will be held September 25-28 in Kansas City, Missouri. In particular, we need your assistance in identifying potential panelists for the conference's educational program.
If you are aware of individuals from outside the United States who plan to attend the conference and would be interested and able to contribute to the content of the sessions generated by the 2016 Conference Planning Committee, please encourage them to respond to the Call for Speakers, which can be accessed from the conference website here.

Please note that we are not able to consider additional session topics at this time. Note, too, that ICMA conference attendees value informal, interactive sessions as opposed to more academic presentations of papers. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions. Thank you very much for your help.

Best Regards,

Ross Hoff

Five Municipalities to Participate in FCM's Diverse Voices for Change Initiative
To mark International Women's Day, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is pleased to announce that five municipalities across Canada will participate in its Diverse Voices for Change initiative. The goal of the program is to increase the number of women across diverse communities who participate in local government.

FCM is committed to increasing the proportion of women in local government to 30 per cent by 2026 and to provide more opportunities and greater visibility to women from under-represented groups such as aboriginal communities and immigrants.

"Local government has to be inclusive of women from diverse communities and FCM is working hard to achieve this important goal" said Raymond Louie, FCM President. "FCM is bringing together municipal leaders and community organizations to ensure that local government truly represents all Canadians."
The municipalities chosen to participate in FCM's Diverse Voices for Change initiative are:
  • The City of Edmonton
  • The City of London
  • The City of Montréal
  • The Municipality of Sioux Lookout
  • Halifax Regional Municipality
The participating communities offer a great portrait of Canada in representing all regions and municipalities of all sizes. They also share a willingness to commit to increasing women's participation, specifically aiming to include the voices of under-represented women.

As part of the program, participating municipalities will work with community organizations to implement strategies, recommendations, policies and procedures to strengthen the voice of women from diverse communities in local decision making and leadership. FCM will provide resources and funding support to elected officials to engage with urban Indigenous, racialized and immigrant women to develop a more inclusive and representative system.

"Our government is proud to partner with FCM to deliver meaningful change and to ensure that the number of women engaged in local government continues to expand," said the Hon. Patricia Hajdu, Federal Minister for the Status of Women. "Increasing the representation of women, and especially those in underrepresented communities, is a priority of this government. We look forward to seeing the impact of this program in selected communities, and the entire municipal sector in the future."

Local governments play an essential role in helping women contribute to local economic development and participate as equals in their community. Find out how FCM and its partners work to promote gender equality in local government at home and abroad.
