Alberta Members: Resources and Funding Available for Intersection Safety Month

Did you know that grants are available to support traffic safety in your community?

Non-profit societies, charitable organizations, community coalitions and networks, and publicly funded organizations and institutions are eligible to apply for a grant from Alberta Transportation to raise traffic safety awareness, provide training and education and support community engagement. The application deadline is January 31st, 2015 and funding of up to $17,000 per project is available. Application guidelines can be found on the Saferoads website (http://www.saferoads.com/ATSF/traffic-safety-fund.html).

As well, municipalities are reminded to promote Intersection Safety Month in January. Last year, 80 people were killed and more than 8,000 people were injured in collisions at Alberta’s road intersections. Raising awareness and promoting safety of related hazards is a great step towards protecting Albertans on the road.  The province has resources that municipalities can use to promote traffic safety in their community, including video and audio advertisements, billboards, and posters.

Alberta Members: February 2nd, 2015 Application Deadline for Community Based Greening Project Funding

Don’t miss the opportunity to promote the opportunity for grant funding to support your community in becoming greener.  Sponsored by Walmart Canada and Evergreen, these grants for community organizations enable initiatives relating to planting, invasive species removal, community food gardens, wildlife habitat restoration and more.

Funding is available to community groups and non-profit organizations working collaboratively with a local municipality, government agency, crown corporation, hospital or university to make a public land greener. Up to 50% of the total project cost can be supported through grants of $10,000, $5,000, and $3,500.

More information and application forms are available on the Evergreen website at http://www.saferoads.com/ATSF/traffic-safety-fund.html.  Applications are being accepted until February 2, 2015.

NWT Releases LGAs Training & Supports Needs Study

This past summer the Local Government Administrators of the Northwest Territories (LGANT) released its 2014 Local Government Administrators (LGAs) Training and Support Needs Study Final Report.

The goal of the study was to gather reliable information on the training and support needs of LGAs in the NWT. The results of the study provide LGANT and its Public Service Capacity Initiative for Community Governments (PSCICG) partners with directions for supporting LGAs and community government capacity building. The study was undertaken by LGANT and developed in consultation with the School of Community Government, Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) and funded through the PSCICG.

The key LGA training and support requirements were identified as: human resource management (HRM), communications and engagement skills, leadership competencies, financial management, legislation and policy drafting and implementation, plan implementation, procurement and contract management LGAs identified capacity building at all levels as an urgent need to strengthen community government operation and administration overall.  They identified the following key areas for additional or improved staff training and support: Financial and bookkeeping procedures, IT and community infrastructure technology, customer service and basic business communication as well as supervisory training for those who are ready to step up.

The most often identified barriers to accessing training and development in the Northwest Territories were: location, accessibility, travel expenses, budget limitation, scheduling and time commitments and low literacy levels of some of the staff.

Learning preferences were identified as shorter training during the working week, workshop format, hands-on and one-on-one training that is locally available. LGAs also said that expanded partnerships or additional sources for training, including part-time and continuing education, would increase learning opportunities.

A copy of the 2014 LGAs Training and Supports Need Study is available on the LGANT website.
