CAMA Holds Quarterly Board Meeting in Jasper, AB – 2015 Conference Location

At the most recent meeting of the CAMA Board of Directors held on September 11th, 2014, a number of issues for the Association were discussed.  The following highlights the key issues and provides a short description of each.

Strategic Planning Session
Don MacLellan, Chair of the Strategic Plan Implementation Team and CAMA First Vice-President, led a session on CAMA’s Strategic Plan for 2014-2019.  The session is conducted annually to ensure that the appropriate adjustments are made to work plans and that emerging issues are incorporated into the Plan.  The Board always considers the current Strategic Plan, the Dashboard Report and the Five Year Financial Plan as part of its deliberations.  More information on CAMA’s projects will be highlighted in future editions of e-Brief.  An environmental scan and a full review of the Plan will be conducted in 2016.

Update on Communications/Marketing Plan
The Board approved proceeding with a new Communications/Marketing Plan back in May of 2014.  Since that time, a CAMA Sub-Committee has been struck to oversee the work of the plan consultants, and to work with our Provincial and Territorial Association partners who have a large part to play in the overall plan.  The specific tactics of the plan are progressing rapidly and members will soon see new advertising materials and testimonials that include our own CAMA members.  The purpose of the new Communications/Marketing Plan is to help grow the CAMA membership, to promote local government administration as an attractive career choice and to raise the awareness of municipal administrators and CAMA with government officials, elected Councils and public administration schools.

Update on CAMA and Provincial/Territorial Association Partnership

The Provincial/Territorial Association Meeting was held on Monday, May 26th, 2014 at the 2014 CAMA Conference in Niagara Falls and was attended by 20 representatives from CAMA and the Provincial Associations.  This forum provided an opportunity for the representatives from all provincial associations and CAMA to come together to discuss issues of mutual interest.

During this meeting, CAMA President Robert Hughes made a presentation on behalf of our membership to representatives of Provincial/Territorial Associations about the potential for enhancing the current relationship between CAMA (the National organization) and our Provincial/Territorial partner associations.  The goals of this newly strengthened relationship are as follows:
  • Improving/facilitating communication with Provincial and Federal senior staff.
  • Coordinating efforts regarding accessing programs at respective Provincial or Federal levels.
  • Initiating discussion regarding coordination of member services where mutually agreeable.
  • Increasing awareness of municipal administration as a career choice.
As a result of that meeting, a Provincial/Territorial Association Steering Committee and a Working Group have been struck to work on these goals with CAMA.

Website and Social Media
The Board also reviewed updates on website and member section statistics for the quarter and discussed a report on CAMA’s social media program.  If you aren’t already following CAMA please visit our website to get signed up: http://www.camacam.ca/en/about/SocialMediaTools.asp

2015 CAMA Conference and Beyond
Ms. Jennifer Goodine, CAMA Executive Director presented a report on the very successful 2014 Niagara Falls Conference.  It was both a financial and content success with member survey’s giving all sessions an excellent or very good overall score.  It also ranks as one of our best attended Conferences with 243 delegates, 46 companions and 67 golfers.  A number of learning’s were discussed as the Board debriefed on how the event went.  Any improvements noted will be incorporated into the 2015 Jasper Conference.

The next Conference will be held at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge from June 1st – 3rd, 2015.    The CAMA Conference Program Sub-Committee Chaired by President Hughes (and members Marc Landry, Jake Rudolph, Jeff Renaud, Jack Benzaquen and Dan Carnegie) are working on a great speaker program along with some fun social activities.  You will hear more in the coming months but I can tell you that the entire Conference will be “Business Casual” including the President’s Dinner due to the beautiful setting at this facility!  You won’t want to miss it.  The hotel room block is now open.  If you haven’t already made your hotel reservations, please visit our website at http://www.camacam.ca/en/conference/2015Conference.asp

Looking ahead, our 2016 Conference will be held at the Delta Winnipeg/Convention Centre, and the City of Gatineau, QC has been chosen as the location for the 2017 Conference.  The 2018 Conference will be held in Atlantic Canada with a location to be determined over the next few months.

Update on CAO Performance Management and Evaluation Committee
A Position Paper is being prepared on the issue of CAO Performance Management and Evaluation.  A Sub-Committee has been struck to oversee this effort.  The Sub-Committee is chaired by Janice Baker (and members Robert Hughes, Don MacLellan, Donald Hrynyk, and Jason Gariepy).  This should be an excellent resource for all CAO’s once the work of the Sub-Committee has been completed.

Membership Services / CAMA National Office
The Board considered a status report from Ms. Jennifer Goodine with respect to the member services and the activities of the CAMA National Office.  CAMA currently has 504 members.  Our membership continues to grow and we encourage all our members to reach out to their colleagues who have yet to join.  There is strength in numbers.

Treasurer’s Report
The Board heard the Treasurer’s report from Keith Arns and approved the financial statements for the period of April 1st to July 31st, 2014.  CAMA continues to be in a strong financial position.

2015 CAMA Awards of Excellence Program
Jake Rudolph, Chair of the 2015 Awards Committee, is putting his team together and members will soon hear details of next year’s program with the deadline for submissions being February 27th, 2015.

Policy on Member Engagement
As part of CAMA’s Strategic Plan and due to an increasing interest in our membership to be involved in the organization, the Board has put together a Policy on Member Engagement.  As part of that policy the following criteria will be used in selecting CAMA members to sit on committees:

• Interest and expertise of the applicant in the subject matter.
• A balanced geographic representation.
• A balanced municipal size representation.
• A gender, language and ethnic diversity that is representative of the membership.

Please watch for opportunities to participate in your Association as they become available.

Webinars
The webinars that are offered through CAMA’s partnership with LGMA BC are continuing to be very popular.    These sessions are also geared for staff in your municipality so be sure to pass the information along to them.  Watch for more details on the Fall series which begins on October 14th, 2014 and will end on December 10th, 2014.

Future Board Meetings
The next Board meeting will be held in Ottawa, ON from November 26-28, 2014 with the March 2015 meeting being held in Mississauga, ON from March 18-20, 2015.

A special thanks to Mayor Richard Ireland and Mark Fercho, CAO with the Municipality of Jasper for their kind hospitality.
