The Ontario Municipal Administrators’ Association was founded in 1958, at a time when the chief administrative officer was not yet recognized by Ontario legislation and some in the provincial government predicted that a municipal CAO role spelled the end of democratic local government.

During the early years, the association’s priorities were information exchange, legitimizing the CAO position and ensuring educational opportunities.

Today, we continue to promote sharing, participation and improvement in local government. We’re finding new ways to connect CAOs with each other. We’re helping retired members find fulfilling ways to continue contributing to the profession. And we’re helping newer members grow into their CAO role with confidence.

Since 1958, OMAA has grown from 10 members to more than 200. Along the way, we’ve embraced new technology, enhanced our professional development mandate and maintained strong relationships with other levels of government and municipally-oriented organizations.

The way we do our work has changed but our priorities have stayed the same: leadership excellence in local public service and continuous improvement in municipal government administration.
